Scatter plots are powerful tools in statistics for visualizing the relationship between two continuous variables. They depict data points as dots on a graph, with one variable on the x-axis and the other on the y-axis. By analyzing the overall pattern of these dots, we can uncover interesting connections between the variables.
Here's what we can learn from a scatter plot:
1. Direction: This refers to whether the two variables tend to increase or decrease together.
.Positive direction: As the value on the x-axis increases, the value on the y-axis also tends to increase (points go up from left to right).
.Negative direction: As the value on the x-axis increases, the value on the y-axis tends to decrease (points go down from left to right).
.No direction: There's no clear trend, and the points appear randomly scattered.
2. Strength: This describes how closely the points cluster around a trend.
.Strong relationship: The points form a clear pattern, like a line or a curve.
.Weak relationship: The points are scattered widely, with no apparent trend.
3. Form: This indicates the overall shape of the point distribution.
.Linear: The points tend to follow a straight line.
.Curvilinear: The points follow a curved path, like a parabola or an S-shape.
.No clear form: The points show no specific pattern.
