Great interview! It's always good to listen to other pilots from different countries and how they compare their stuff to our, plust tactics. The first time I hear and saw the Tornado was when I was watching tv during Desert Storm when I was a kid. I ended up joining the US army and spent 11 yrs in (2000-2011). I ended up doing one tour in Afghanistan (2003) and two in Iraq. I believe it was first tour in Iraq in 2005-06' when one of our fighters, I can't remember what type but i'm guessing it was a F-15E because there were two pilots and it flew into a really bad sandstorm near where I was stationed in Iraq. Well something went wrong with their aircraft and they had to eject. We had to go help look for them because the sandstorm was so bad. One pilot was found that later that day caught on a barbed wire fence. The sandstrom was so bad that it just dragged him for a god knows how long until he was caught on the fence. They said it wasn't the ejection that killed him. The other pilot was found in the desert several miles away and he had also died. I'm sure there are some people in here that have been in Iraq and have seen a sandstorm over there, they can be really bad and last for days. It had to be the wind from the storm that threw them around like rag dolls that killed them. Both pilots were still attached to their parachutes when their bodies were found.

Hi Jell-o I understand you’ve just been to the 50th anniversary of topgun. My father was in the Royal Navy for 25 yrs , serving in the Fleet Air Arm. In 1968 he , along with some other Brit aviators , did a tour with the USN based at Miramar. While there they took part in the setting up of Topgun. He and others have done at least one re- union but on this occasion he was unable to go. One fellow Brit , who lives in the states, declined to go because the British involvement appears to have been ‘air brushed out’ of Topgun history. This appears to be a great shame. Regards Mark.
@FighterPilotPodcast5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, Mark. I recently finished Dan Pedersen's book "Top Gun; An American Story." He spoke of Brits on exchange in Miramar at the time and how the officers of the two nations collaborated and worked well together, as we have since the Revolutionary War through to today. I lend no credence to some conspiratorial effort to rewrite history for no clear purpose. In reading the book, it is my assessment that the involvement was not significantly causal to the forming, or the success, of TOPGUN. My two cents.
@mark64griffin205 жыл бұрын
Hi Jello Thanks for your speedy reply ! Dan Peterson is a name I do remember. I do know that the brits thoroughly enjoyed their time at Miramar and certainly found the experience very rewarding. As a family, we would happily have stayed on in California, sadly my father had to come home and carry on his career in the UK. What’s not to like about San Diego ?! Fantastic channel, well done to all concerned. Regards Mark.

5:10 There was an incident in North Cyprus back in 2019 where an S-200 missile that was shot against an Israeli F-16 over Syria missed. The missile's self detonation mechanism did not work, resulting the missile gliding all the way to North Cyprus and exploding 60 feet from the ground over the mountains. Thank God there were no casualties.

I'd love to hear (if you are willing/able) some stuff from pilots former Warsaw Pact countries that are now in NATO, e.g. Poland which was and is still using the MiG-29 and is now also using the F-16, as well as SU-22 (SU-17) for Ground Strike and SEAD, etc. Would be very interesting to hear about the transition into NATO and how that was on the Pilots. I also read that they are looking at purchasing F-35s. There's not much out there about that whole topic at all, let alone in English. Pop culture Tornado: the Ace Combat series has had them pretty much every game since AC2. Great low-level rocket, but not agile at all and didn't have a great stall speed. Did get clusterbomb dispensers as a unique special weapon and those were pretty good. Had some utility as a decent F/A aircraft; you could use it like an A-10 while also having enough forward speed for some basic pursuit n shoot -but not anything like a next-gen aircraft like the F35. The lazy mechanics/quirks of gaming being what they are clusterbomblets were really effective against surface vessels. They chewed up Destroyers and Cruisers quite well.

As a naval aviator, how is life for pilots aboard a ship and does it differ much from the average sailor apart from the obvious job specific duties like pilots getting to fly etc. What is day to day life like? And on a typical deployment, how often do you fly? Do you fly every day or do you have some days where instead of flying you're doing some sort of training in a classroom-like environment? Thanks and keep up the great work fellas!
