FUTURE VIEWERS LISTEN: You do not need to remove the intake manifold to remove the alternator. He made it very complicated. You just need to remove: Charge hose Coolant hose passenger side Rad fan Power steering pump 3 bolts then move over to the side with hoses still attached Remove alternator bolts 3 in total Loosen 2 bolts from the ac compressor Should take you about 30 minutes each time

Dear David, This works! I have changed this part on my 2010 VOLVO XC-90. The alarm came the first time during a trip to Maine. The "POWER SYSTEMSERVICE URGENT" continued appearing every so often, until I decided to tackle this work. The part cost me around $55 USD form FCP Euro. The removal is much more difficult than putting it all back together again. I suggest to take pictures of all the connectors and bolts to remember how it goes back together. Thank you David for this VIDEO it saved me some good dollars.

Man, just getting to the alternator in that thing looks like a huge pain in the ass.. have to love that Volvo engineering !!

Your video saved the day. Went far down the rabbithole of Google and KZbin. Your video was the only one describing my fault AND the cause. Bad charging S60, changed the regulator. Charge was fine at over 14 volt but threw warning after 15sek. LIN-regulator is a thing I didn't knew existed. Thanks a bunch!

WoW! I think after watching a few more videos for removing and reinstalling the alternator than a person should, you get the prize for removing the most parts compared to the others... Good Video though, I have to do this in the next couple of days, weather cooperating! Thanks!

This was the problem. I told the boss to make sure to get the right alternator. I just swapped the regulator, problem solved. For future reference. You don't have to take the intake off. You can take the belt off, unbolt the power steering pump and move it. Take the top bolt for alternator out as well as the bottom 2, take the wires off, loosen the 2 bolts at the bottom of the ac compressor as well as taking the intercooler hose off and voila. You can take the whole alternator out by turning it around the right way. I've done it twice now. All my bolt heads were 10mm too except for the alt wire nut. I do have smaller hands though so the power steering bolts were easier for me. Putting the belt back on is a pain but to me still easier and cheaper than removing the intake.

Man, so glad to be out of that truck and take care of business at home now it's getting near summer again. I missed your Videos Dave, not just the home projects but those occasional runs to different places with the legit gripes aabout traffic and all that madness, I go thru the same crap here.

great Video DW!! I just put a second hand alternator on my V70 T5 2006 and the guy is very genuin and it was fine on his car and I believe him. Mine is the same as your video light comes on after about 10 seconds. Battery voltage goes up to 13v but no higher. Makes no change when the light comes on so still charging. under load with lights fan on etc drops to 12.5V. will change my Voltage regulator to see if that makes a different. on mine I don't have to take off manifold, easier to remove cooling fan and remove alternator from engine. Only about 1 hour work after doing it twice! will let you know results!
@ianvanderhyde7086 жыл бұрын
so I did some tests and only charging at 13.5v max raising engine speed made no difference, battery taking 7amps. With loads on lights,heater,heated seats dropped to 13v, and battery taking amps went down to 0amps, No good as it won't be able to maintain good charge in the winter months. Discharged battery for for a couple of minutes. Restarted charging at 13.5v again and battery was taking 7amps. No good a good battery should take a good 30amps once discharged. So I took out the alternator, which only took 30 minutes by accessing by taking cooling fan motor and having done the job already of course. ( v70 2.4 T5 2006 estate) Fitted my old Voltage regulator pack 2hour job start to finish. URICA charging at 14.2v and battery taking 18Amps and Light stays out. Once again thank you DW Red you saved me over £100 from buying a complete new Alternator!!!

Hi David , thank you for this. My battery low light is on all of a sudden on my 2004 Volvo XC90 T6 2.9. The alternator and starter were replaced last year and has had hardly any miles on it since. Now I start the vehicle and the light comes on after about 5 minutes. The battery is new and completely charged, when its running I get only 11.22v. I can't get to the alternator easily as you know to unplug it but I left the battery connected all night and the battery did not drain. I thought there was a parasitic drain so always kept the battery disconnected. Anyway, I'd like to order the regulator and try that first as I don't think the alternator should be cooked already with the ltd miles put on it. I spoke to FCP euro and the regulator they suggest with my VIN is the same as the one you suggest but a few different numbers/letters. The one they showed me is: BR14-H1 (yours is BR14-C-L) and F00MA45 211(yours is 212). The little very long number is different too but I think that might be irrelevant. It is Bosch. Is that because of VIN that it's a little different? I'd like to order. Thanks for the great video.

HI thanks for the video. I have just purchased a 2005 XC90 T6 with this problem. I have a battery drain problem also. I noticed yesterday that I am getting a humming noise from the alternator at rest, ( engine not running ) I have had a quick look online to find the part but not finding exactly the same Numbers as your part. Where can i purchase the new regulator to make sure I don't have to do this job twice? Thanks

Just curious. If you have time. Bust the top cap of the old regulator and see if the circuit board is mad out of ceramic of fiber class.
@ding092510 жыл бұрын
Fiberglass..
@547Rick10 жыл бұрын
They used to make voltage regulators where I worked. We used ceramic as a substrate. It is a more stable product than fiberglass but the cost is higher.
@garcigarcia6 жыл бұрын
Just say that the difference between both voltage regulators is one is 12v and the other one is 14v as you can see clearly @12:07 and that the alternator needs the 14V instead of the 12V.
@crazy4wheeler916 жыл бұрын
Your statement literally makes no sense. A 12 volt system can charge up to 14.5 volts, depending on the condition and state of charge of the battery.
