06 Sonata Shift Problems "Need Help"!

The 06 Hyundai Sonata is having shifting problems. This is the V6 w/5speed Automatic Transmission. It will no longer up shift when shifter is in "D". You have to go to manual mode and hold the shifter in the downshift position and then it will automatically shift up. Also the transmission will not shiftup in the manual mode like it should. Any knowledge on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

Oh I can not thank you enough for posting this video!! My 06' Sonata staryed the same thing two days ago... I just knew it was the end for this car.. As a single mom who is on a super tight budget.. The shop isn't a option for me.So I watched your video and bought some breakclean and went to town !! Not to hard at all!! Now my Sonata is running like a champ again! to remove the console open the center boxes use two hands to pull towards dash board.. then stop you will have two screws on either side . remove those and the front half of the console will come out , you will have two hole pieces. Remember to remove the gear shift knob by unscrewing it.. I am not very good at explaining it But I hope it helps. its a tough job as it is connected very tightly with plastic tabs

So this happen to me & trip tropic was indeed giving me access to higher gears BUT right away it would jump me back down to 2nd gear or what not, no high enough to drive on the highway to get home. HOW IT FIXED IT: Silly as it sounds, it actually worked and haven’t had the issue since. BUT, I read cleaning the shit outta the shifter box area inside & out really good so all the dirt/ build up or god knows what gets trapped in there. You practically have to remove the center console & bottom of the radio dash area but after I cleaned it up real good, bada bing, bada boom! Gears had no problem shifting & haven’t came across the issue since! So save your money & try this before you drop a bunch of cash on parts u don’t need to. Sorry for the long message, & I hope this finds someone who finds it useful :]

Speed sensor input and output. Have to be replace in pairs, one is for up shifts and other down shift.

It's in the {power train system} it is one of the *sensors on the transmission I just bought a 2003 Sonata GLS and I'm going to get mines fixed thank you for this video May 5th Year 2022

make sure the computer that controls the transmission has the most up-to-date adaptive programming information. When servicing these transmissions be sure to use fluid approved by Hyundai.

Sounds like your TCM (Transmition Control Module) computer needs a replacement.

You gotta check the shifter to see if it’s shorted out.. the shift may have had something spilled on it

It could be the Control Neutral Safety Switch. You may need to take it to a Hyundai Dealer and let one of the Service Mechanics take it for a Test Drive.

I have a santa Fe.. it does this on its own.. and I have no idea how to fix it.. the manual is useless and I can't go higher than 2nd gear. Last time it happened, it stopped doing it by itself. HELP! It's an 05. And basically the same shifter set up as this vid.. I'm now stuck at home instead of going to work cuz I can't go on the freeway up hills in 2nd!

Make sure the connector to the shifter is clean and not shorted. If it's ok, replace the shifter assembly.

@@sylviabrinson1768 Yes. Disconnect the shifter's harness and there will be some corrosion inside. Apply some dielectric grease inside the harness before connecting it back and you'll be back to normal.

I have the same problem with my 2006 sonata and I to believe its from a dirty connection. My question is how do you take off the shift cover to get to the connection to clean it? I'd really appreciate the help!

Victoria Bell I don't have that car any longer. I work on so many I cant remember how it came apart. About the only thing I remember I think for sure is that I believe the shifter knob is threaded on. but as far as the shifter cover I just cant remember how that came off, I am sorry.

If that shift works like the Ford "tiptronic",there's a little circuit thingy under the shift cover....It may be worn out...Do the position lights work on the shift when it's moved to the "manual selector".?...

i'm having the exact problem, same car and year. Did you ever find the solution? My only difference is if i hold it in manual shift mode upwards the D stays and its only Drive. Very dangerous because i was driving 45mph and out of nowhere went to d2 and d1 with no break lights clearly, almost caused an accident.

the electrical connections in the shifter console were dirty. like they had pop or coffee spilled one them. I cleaned those and the problem went away

Thank for this great video, it was a big help, I found from all the coffee and other sweet drinks. It had leaked into the plug. And corroded out the 3 of the pins. After cleaning them up And using dialectic grease This cure the problem

The transmission on the Sonata is electronic. If it isn't in the transmission itself I would have your dealer look at the CPU.

I never use the manual Shafting in Sonata 2006 because I always depend on the Automatic , so I recommend using Auto Transmission ,

I just bought a used shifter from a 2008 Hyundai sonata. I have a 2006 Hyundai sonata and hopefully that works. I will be cleaning the prongs to the best of my ability with electrical cleaner or brake cleaner. I really don't recommend brake cleaner because it will break down the plastic on the connections over time. I will also use a little bit of Vaseline to prevent any fluids that might be spilled from the cup holder so it can protect from corrosion. I just bought the whole shifter and switch at a local salvage yard for $25.00 . It took about 30 minutes to remove, it was pretty easy for the most part except for the shifting cable mounted at the front. I'll be installing it soon and hit me back if anyone needs any help with their situation.

I was just going to put this in, there are 3 different sensors that are in my 2001 Sonata (91000 miles).....had to replace them. Happened twice....have the dealer look at it with their computers....can't listen any more, it's painful...

I looked at one for sale today. Just browsing yet. After I fired it up I couldn't get the damn thing back into park. Had to go get the salesman. He sluffed it off, but I could tell this was an issue. Only 25,000 miles on it too. This kind of issue, like electrical, can be a nightmare. Pass!!

I am having this same issue with that code. I bought the new transmission range sensor and swapped that out, but I'm still having the issue. My next steps are to clean all the connectors under the center console. From what I've read, that should fix it. Fingers crossed.

After driving a long period, the D disappears and if i park or reserve it wont come back for me to put it in drive again so the car is just useless until computer resets. I need to fix this. Its bad, i have to plan routes going out and cant stop places smh.

Hi! Yes, cleaning all of the connectors under the center console fixed my issue. I had spilled coffee and it leaked down into that area which was causing the issue... Try cleaning your sensors, its easy and cheap and can't hurt to try. Hopefully you get your car fixed soon!

Tom I'd try a reset first (disconnect battery for 5 mins) and if that doesn't fix it take the cover off the shift surround and check the control board.
