In the summer of 848 AD (Shōwa 15, Kashō 1), Emperor Ninmyō, based on a divine oracle, offered confections and rice cakes associated with the number 16 to the gods on June 16 to ward off epidemics and pray for health and good fortune. This marked the origin of the era name "Kashō," which literally means "auspicious sign."
During the Kamakura period, before Emperor Go-Saga ascended to the throne, he established a tradition on June 16 by purchasing and offering confections using 16 coins. This practice continued after his enthronement.
In the Muromachi period, the tradition of presenting "kazu" (a term referring to the confections for the "Kashō celebration") to the emperor on June 16 is documented in the "Oyudono no Ue no Nikki" (Diary of the Upper Bathhouse).
During the Keichō era, it is recorded in the "Butoku Hennen Shūsei Vol. 44" that Toyotomi Hideyoshi routinely celebrated the "Kashō celebration." In the Edo shogunate, on this day, daimyo, hatamoto, and other samurai of the rank of omemie (allowed to meet the shogun) and above were given confections in the great hall. This event was called "Kashō Chōdai," where the confections were placed on a plain wooden tray with green cedar leaves and distributed one per person.
Among the general populace, there was a custom known as "Kashōku," where people would buy 16 confections or rice cakes with 16 mon (a form of currency) and eat them. Additionally, there was a tradition called "Kashō Nui," where 16-year-old girls would sew up their long sleeves (furisode) into short sleeves (tomesode) on this night. It was also believed that eating umeboshi (pickled plums) made from plums picked on June 16 before a journey would protect one from misfortune, known as "Kashō no Ume."
Thus, the "Kashō celebration" was historically a significant event for warding off epidemics and praying for health and good fortune, continuing actively until the Meiji period. This "Kashō Day" has been revived in modern times as "Wagashi Day" (Japanese Confectionery Day).
