Hello my friends! It's time to start another project. It will be kind of rare plane with stainless steel sole - try to guess what kind :) For the body i decided to use spalted beech wood. As you probably know spalted beech is a little bit weaker than healty wood so i'm gonna make stabilization with blue and green stains - that's the theme of todays episode. Fell free to leave any ask in comments. I hope you got good time, no matter with or without my videos. Cheers Stavros

A process I have never had the opportunity to use. I usually use a mineral oil for this. My spoke shave of curly birch is soaked in automatic transmission oil and that is why it has that reddish hue. Using the mineral oil also is easily renewable if necessary. The body of the plane also gets a several wash coats of blond shellac. I love to see other people’s processes. Thank you for documenting this for us to enjoy and study. Greetings Stavros, from the high plains of Texas.

for the best result, after the vacuum, it is necessary to allow atmospheric pressure to drive the resin inside.The impregnation begins at this moment.

Not some thing I have tried yet, mostly because I don't know how, and do prefer natural wood. I guess this would solve any potential cracking problems that seem to plague thick wood planes. Not sure if that is ever a problem with the thinner body Japanese style planes. That does bring up a question, have you ever played around with them?
@StavrosGakos
@StavrosGakos Жыл бұрын
Hey, i've never used japaneese plane
@robohippy
@robohippy Жыл бұрын
They are totally different. The blades on them are similar to the old irons you use, hard metal forged to a softer metal for the main body of the iron. The chip breaker is a 'new' idea for them, coming in to use in the last 100 to 150 years, I think. I am playing with them also. I have yet to make a western plane, and did get some Japanese style planes. You have to do the final fitting of the blade to the plane body yourself.

I have 3 questions about stabilizing: 1) Will stabilizing increase wear resistant of normal plane wood like pear or beech? 2) Is it possible to stabilize boxed wooden blank? Maybe by using heat resistant wooden glue. 3) Can i stabilize plane which was already made? Thank you.

Following on @carlopieracci2828's question, I'm also curious to as to what type of resin you're using. Blue Spruce uses some type of infused resin (acrylic?) in their tool handles, which gives them wonderful heft and smoothness.

I'm referring to PEG 1000 which is different from the very toxic form that is used in antifreeze. I once used it to stabilize 1/4" slices of wood from a 5x5x8' beam that had sapwood along one corner. I used a wax pencil to number each slice as it came off. After treatment I quarter-matched each piece in sequence to form a bartop that consisted of darker wood with lighter wood forming differing diamonds all the way down the top. It never shrank or split and was one of my most satisfying projects ever. It comes in blocks that look like parafin and I dissolved in in water in a 35 gal. garbage can. I got mine at Highland Woodworking in Atlanta, GA and I was going to send you a link but I don't think they carry it anymore. They could probably get it for anyone who is interested though. Keep up the great work my friend. @@StavrosGakos

What resin brand did you use Stavros ? I’ve been messing around with some cheap methods (acetone + paraloids or thinned epoxy) because classic thermo setting resin is quite expensive and haven’t been able to find a good brand that does not require to sell a kidney in order to purchase a liter.
