Today our devotional focuses on an event that took place in Bethany, where Jesus went to stay, not very far from Jerusalem. A good choice as Jerusalem was becoming very busy and filled with those making their pilgrimage in preparation for Passover. In this account of Mary’s anointing, the themes of belief and rejection are very obvious. As Mary expresses faith and love in her act of worship - we will also witness the cold, calculated and even cynical response of Judas which reveals His calloused unbelief. In addition, we also are able to see the devotion of Martha as she tends to the physical needs of her guests.
It appears to be evident in the gospel accounts that Mary is the more reflective and emotional of the sisters. Here in v. 3, probably after the eating had finished, Mary expresses a spontaneous outpouring of her love for Jesus and she takes “a pound of expensive ointment and anoints the feet of Jesus.” Listen and allow the devotional to speak to your mind and heart.
