In the late 80s I regularly made the journey between Southampton and Manchester. This brought back a lot of memories - the cathedral at Winchester, the IBM tower at Basingstoke, the train reversing in/out of Reading, the now-decommissioned power station at Didcot, the 'encased' station at Birmingham NS, Mow Cop around the Staffordshire-Cheshire border, the viaduct at Stockport etc, the final run in to Manchester Piccadilly. Many thanks.

It is SUCH A HUGE SHAME that the UK railways are SO INSANELY EXPENSIVE to use - any class anywhere. My entire family just loves trains, but we are only using buses OR OUR OWN CARS! Such a shame. 😒 But thank you for the excellent video! 😃 Really appreciated. 🙂🙂🙂 I so wish our family could one day use trains in the UK as we always used in Finland, my country of origin, where the train ticket prices are a tiny fraction of the UK ones. Thanks again for the great video about what our family would like to use but can never afford. 😒

Advance fares are insanely cheap. Try it. I usually only book Advance and have got to Scotland for less than 50 quid and I mean the Highlands. Southampton to Manchester 2 months in advance is 41 pounds vs hundreds with railcard.. you can groupsave too It's ridiculously expensive in most of Europe too Netherlands for example France We're just so lucky the railway here is so frequent and part of our engrained lives. France less so besides high speed routes just a few services per day vs half hour hour or 5 minute schedules. Culture shock that most countries just haven't adapted and modernised as much as we have to go literally anywhere almost by train even underground in 2 major cities. Not in America France lost alot of old rail lines in somme areas and other parts Much is cycle routes now. Culture shock but as always railway companies will take slight advantage and prioritise who need the railway and who commute for leisure rocket up fares on peak hours or make certain lines dearer than others taking tourism and scenery into account like GWR and the West Country. Less of a comuters lifestyle on some of those lines because motorways serve just as good if not better. But the railway companies also know that making train fares too cheap means commuters can't get to work or as efficiently plus too many people would push people off the commute and push up congestion on roads. So you can't win or lose by lowering fairs on peak hours Train pal is a fantastic split ticketing and advance ticket app perfectly legal to use better than the rest of the apps like trainline

Time was when there was a route on the Somerset and Dorset line via Bath and Bristol. Worked well but sadly now history

My wife and I are planning on short break to Glasgow, from Newcastle at the end of May We actually used LNER in November for a trip to London (or first train journey for 20+ years) and have already booked another trip to Edinburgh for March (again LNER) so we just fancied trying another company. Unfortunately tickets are still not available, but just for interest sake I have been looking at prices for early in April, as a comparison: Cross Country (£36.50) Lumo (32.39) and LNER (£19.50) .. for 2 adults, with a Two Together railcard to Edinburgh, at about lunchtime on a Monday I actually thought Lumo was going to be dirt-cheap but would probably be packed Given the choice of the 3 companies .. which would you use ?
@harrystransportdiaries6607 Жыл бұрын
It depends what you’re looking for, LNER & Lumo are going to be the same for comfort as they’re practically the same train just in a different colour. i personally would go LNER as they’re the most common on the route and also the Cheapest. i am a big fan of CrossCountry and have used them countless times, however i wouldn’t spend almost double just to use their service as they’re not that much better in my personal opinion. as for Lumo, i personally haven’t used them yet so i cannot comment, maybe try them and come back to tell me what you think! Sorry for the wait on the reply i hope i could help!

The only thing I could say bad about cross country is that the leg room is appalling in most spaces. Other than that the trains are good. However I do prefer TransPennine and LNER for my journeys

I did the journey as far as Southampton (First Class there and Standard back) Standard comfortable and £77. First a little bit more comfortable but was £156 with railcard and split ticketing. Not worth the difference as the on board catering was minimal and of poor quality. Will now buy refreshments at M&S Piccadilly and travel Standard. In general First Class in the UK is poor value for money but passengers do not complain as many travel free on their company. Perhaps it would help if companies paid employees the First class fare but the employee could travel Standard and pocket the difference?
@harrystransportdiaries6607 Жыл бұрын
Yes i’d agree, i personally have only travelled first class on SWR Class 444’s and also Greater Anglia’s Class 745 and the difference was minimal. Shame really.

Never get first class at the office or machine. Get standard and at weekends or off peak hours you can pay just 10 15 25 pounds difference asking on board cross country to upgrade to say Birmingham New Street. Edinburgh can be a 35 pound upgrade on weekend. I sometimes dip in on weekends they've always offered better deals this way
