Ever heard the expression, in for a penny, in for a pound? Or, go all in? I expect you probably have, because the age-old disease If-I-Spend-A-Bit-More-I’ll-Get-Something-Even-Better-itis has been around since humans first started trading berries for bits of sharpened rock. Well, in the berry corner is the new, £1,000 Baltic Aquascaphe GMT, and in the bit of sharpened rock corner is the £3,000 Tudor Black Bay GMT. Is it time to put your berries where your mouth is? No wait, that doesn’t sound right…

I just bought my third 39mm Steinhart and I will say that, especially for the vintage models, I prefer that smaller size. Perhaps if my wrists were larger than the 17cm/6.8in I have, things would be different. But even then I would feel that those retro-designs like the Aquascaphe just feel more "authentic" in 39mm.

That movement inside the Baltic, the Soprod, has some interesting history. While it's more or less a workhorse Swiss movement these days, it's actually based on the Seiko 4L family of movements, which was actually used in Credor watches, which are a notch above Grand Seiko. Very thin movements, designed to provide a higher-end alternative to ETA 2892. Also very Swiss-like for a Japanese design.

you're confusing a lot of facts here 1. back then Credor WASN'T "above GS" 2. that Seiko movement was a 1:1 copy of the 2892, intended to be a drop-in replacement for that movement 3. that project pretty much failed, the stuff went to Soprod, Seiko was kinda pissed and then continued the project in the current 6L movements, which are essentially 95% 2892 clones with a 2-3 proprietary Seiko "mods" (diashock instead of the swiss equivalents, the magic lever for allegedly somewhat improved winding efficiency and iirc one more thing that currently escapes me) but, for all intents and purposes, that caliber, and the current Soprod iteration even more so, are "2892 clones" through and through. so no, these are definitely NOT "higher end alternative to 2892" but merely "an exact same alternative manufactured by a different company" (much like the Sellita SW200 is to the ETA 2824)
@jach99
@jach99 4 жыл бұрын

The Soprod movement I would argue is above a Powermatic. Thinner, more refined, similar to a 2892. And it's actually based on a Japanese design, which was also used by Seiko in their upper-most range of watches, Credor (of course, this was a higher grade version, but still).

@@smashexentertainment676 I sort of have it too with my Khaki Field Mechanical, well without the "matic" part. Not saying it's bad by any means, no problems whatsoever with it. I was just saying that for about the same money, the Baltic offers a movement which is a notch above.

@@BALTICWatches I know, I already looked on the site because I do really like the watch itself, and I'm well aware it's very subjective, but in my opinion both the BOR and the tropic (rubber) give the watch a 'cheaper' look. The BOR kinda looks like the Rolex Jubilee on the GMT II, but it seems far less balanced in design. Then again, 'de gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum'... Maybe in the future a different bracelet will be available that is more to my liking.

IMO the achilles heel of most sub $2k GMT watches is that the watch has to be entirely reset when you change timezones, defeating the main sell of the complication. I'm not sure if this Baltic has the same issue but it's likely the case

Got my 2019 back from repairs, and it hasn't had an issue. There's no other travel GMTs in this price range, unless you count some decades old Omegas.Which, consequently, is why GMTs like the Baltic don't have the same issue.
@jjlad5037
@jjlad5037 4 жыл бұрын
@@rousseau327 ...I strongly suspect the Tudor date failure will be a reoccurring issue every 18-24 months. Some early ones have been back twice for the fix already. If Tudor wants to bring back consumer confidence, they should come clean and tell us what's wrong with the watch, and how they're fixing it. Until they do, I'm off the Todor brand. Check GS for their great GMT's at affordable prices (and no defects).
@rousseau327
@rousseau327 4 жыл бұрын
@@jjlad5037 Oh, I absolutely agree that they should at the very least have some sort of public statement on this. Ridiculous to spend $3k-$4k and have this hanging over your head. However, the recurring ones seem to be happening earlier on in the product release cycle, and most of the recently repairs seem to be holding up alright. Obviously, time will tell. I'd love a GS GMT, but most of the versions are more expensive than the Tudor. Not to mention, the rotating bezel is great for me, and GS don't quite have. I use the GMT hand as an office GMT to reference a different time zone at home, and then rotate it to home time when I travel.

I've been mulling this dilemma now for a couple of years, probably from when this video first came up and finally found myself close to going for the Baltic...until just now. I just realized the error of having the bezel marked as 24. There is no 24th hour in a day. When telling time, you can say 23:59 and 00:01 but once the clock reaches "midnight", it instantly (or just about) resets to 0:00. I know it's rather petty but that's my story. Seriously, just about everything else about the watch I love.

I've never REALLY liked the snowflake hands (I always have to talk myself into not minding them) and I've always liked the symmetry of a 6 o'clock date window. So, yeah, the Baltic should do the trick - plus the design and overall proportions are even more true to it's vintage forebears. Yummy.
