The market is not necessarily a rollercoaster if you know your way around the market, there are various opportunities in the present market to accrue good profit, If you are not too savvy with the market, just buy and hold on strong companies with good earnings, or consult with advisors on ETFs and actively managed funds. that’s what works for my spouse and I. We've made over 30% capital growth minus dividends.

Keep in mind that the retirement options are not only “invest everything in growth stocks” vs “invest everything in dividend stocks”. In order to have good diversification, neither of those is a good plan. Have your portfolios in broad stock funds (eg. S&P 500), small cap growth & value, international and emerging markets, Dividend funds, REITs, sector funds not highly correlated with market as a whole, commodities, bonds and cash. At a younger age, you might not have much in commodities, dividends, bonds, sectors, etc. but as you get closer to retirement, skew your investments towards some of the more conservative options! I still plan on having 60-70% of my investments in stocks (of many sorts) at retirement, but will also have some balanced investments, bonds, and cash.

I’ve beaten the market my entire investing career by 5-10% per year, why would I diversify so I only get average returns when I can look at the market and invest accordingly and beat it. @@cliverussel2792 So much this. If you're afraid that you constantly make poor investments just buy straight bonds and be done with it. Otherwise you'll be making infinitely more money investing in safe dividend stocks over the long term. You should diversify your stock portfolio if you're scared of the ups and downs of the market, but you shouldn't be diversifying to that degree what you're actually investing in.
@Figgy20000
@Figgy20000 2 жыл бұрын
Every above average trader beats the market. If you have confidence in your picks and what you're doing you should always be beating inflation. Mutual funds aren't meant to beat the market, and the people running them don't make money off them beating the market. They make money based off how many people buy into them, and for this reason all the top Mutual Funds are built to be EXTREMELY safe. As long as they have higher yield than their MERS, people who want a very safe return will continue to throw money at them. Even if you're Mutual Fund somehow loses money, that doesn't change the MERS. The guy running it at the end of the day still makes his cut. BTW Mutual Funds are a scam and you should never invest in one. If you have enough capital you can simply diversify into what they are diversifying and skip the middleman stealing your money.

I shoot for stocks paying 2-5% with less than an 80% payout ratio. I like to let the dividends build up in my account and reinvest them when something on my radar gets unreasonably beat up, or when the market in general takes a dip and everything goes on sale. Sitting on about 3500 a month dividends in my late 30s, so its working well for me. I've found that tracking compared to the index I'm about even with it...its just my up years aren't typically up as much and my down years aren't down as much. For example 2 years ago when the index was up about 20% I was only up about 10%, and last year when the index was down about 20%, I ended up pretty close to even on the year, but accumulated more shares, so I'll be setting personal highs in my account long before the index sets a new high.

But if you take 3.5-4% of lets say a million dollar s&p 500 etf you will never run out of money amd u can do this every year. I mean dividend income is a great source of income, but typically reinvesting them and taking 4% out every year is a bit much what most do. The s&p has an average rate of return at 10.5%. So your money will still grow at 6.5% if you take 4% and u will never run out of money, so I understand the video but its definitely a better option to retire early than to live off of dividends

My overall dividend yield is about 3%. I know going much higher than that would severely cripple growth potential. My primary concern isn’t the yield itself but how frequently I receive dividends. I want to get paid all the time. I don’t want to limit myself to just 4 payments a year.

@@AnimatedIdiotGuide I see your point, too. I think some people make the mistake of allowing the dividend schedule to influence their investment decisions like buying a stock they otherwise wouldn't or buying a more expensive etf because if pays monthly when in reality they should see both sides of the equation. I'm not saying you're doing this but this is what many people do.

The only problem with this explanation is you’re leaving out increases in dividends, and only focusing on the starting dividend yield. If you look back at the 10 year dividend history of the company, and they have raised their dividend year over year by 5%, in 10, 20, 30 years your Yield on cost would be huge. You could be making 20%-50% or more on your initial investment just in dividends. Looking at a 3% dividend yield may seem small, but its what that yield will be over time that will make you wealthy! Buy companies that historically raise their dividend every year!
@ChrisInvests

Overall will dividends counterbalance the money you invested if all the stocks you bought went down in value? If you bought XYZ at $40 for 1000 shares But over time the stock is at $30. You just lost $10 per share. How will dividends help you make income when your portfolio is down $10 per share of XYZ?
@ChrisInvests
@ChrisInvests Жыл бұрын
No it will probably still be a loss
@randomyoutuber308
@randomyoutuber308 Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. I mean...yeah, you could lose money if the stock drops, cuts its dividend, drops more, and turns into garbage. If XYZ you bought at 40 though has a 5% yield and you've been reinvesting those dividends and 10 years later it drops to 30 bucks a share, but you've got 1600 shares now, your 40,000 initial investment is still worth 48,000 even with the price per share drop. The other thing to consider is yeah, dividend paying stocks can cause you a loss, but so can any stock.

What about “homemade dividends?” Too often people love the form of a dividend being paid out. There is another option of harvesting growth by selling shares. These methods are identical in substance. In addition, the tax on homemade dividend could be more favorable than that of actual dividends received. This is what I help my clients realize.

Quick 5 second math: ~$250,000 at ~5% yield More than 5% yield starts getting into very risky or unsustainable territory. Next to zero stocks maintain a 5% yield for more than 10 years and the ones that do often don't grow.

Great video, explained really well. I am 27 and have just started investing for retirement. What I am planning to do is invest in growth stock funds and forgo the high dividend yield for the time until I decide to retire and just then switch to higher dividend yield, and then I'll probably limit it to max 4-ish percent, so I can still have growth and not deplete my funds.
@prw56
@prw56 2 жыл бұрын
That's the thing I don't get about videos like this, the only purpose of investing in dividend focused things is when you are going to use that money for something other than investing, which you won't do until you retire. But the videos talk like its a choice you need to think about, dividends vs growth. On top of that, dividends (regardless of whether they are reinvested) are taxed on the year you receive them, so I see nothing but downsides to them outside of retirement accounts.
@MurrMan23
@MurrMan23 2 жыл бұрын
@@prw56 the only purpose is to spend the dividends? That is not at all true. Reinvesting dividends is the definition of compound interest. You’re also not valuing yield on cost, which is the powerful way dividends can make you rich. Warren buffet has $1.3 billion dollars in coke stock. After holding this stock for as long as he has, with all the dividend increases year over year, his yield on cost is 50%. Thats right, he doubles his cost of $1.3 billion every 2 years in dividends with one stock. Dividends can be extremely powerful when you understand them. You will also pay taxes on growth when you sell your stocks for living so taxes affect both strategies.

Right now i have a bit over 5000$ and estimate that i'll have about 20,000 by 18. I work a small family tile instillation and renovation business, its dirty and demanding work that i dont want to be caught up in doing for the rest of my life. I've looked at all types of individual stocks, index funds, CD's, and REIT's for investing. I dont have and likely wont have the capital to make 1000 a month from making those types of investments before 23. Do you think i should get into the buying, renovating, and renting of real estate? I've though of buying a multi family home and living in one of the units practically evading the costs that come with house payments and utilities. Then going on to repeat the process buying multiple multi family homes like duplex's or triplex's. The thing is ive gotten so much negative feedback talking about doing something like that, all the things that could and do go wrong. Idk man im just confused on what to do, im not pursing a career that requires a college degree so i just dont know

Dividend income is the absolute worst, most impractical way of trying to retire. You're SUPPOSED to be buying bonds except the interest rates and yields haven't been reasonable since 2008. But there are alternatives, like crowd funded loans. I get an average return of 10% on my portfolio, and can keep reinvesting it every month.
