Bart the Bear™ was born in a zoo in 1977 and adopted by Doug and Lynne Seus and trained to be in films. The Seuses grand adventures with Bart took them from the Austrian Alps to the bejeweled backstage of the Academy Awards. Bart appeared in hundreds of films, including "The Bear", "The Great Outdoors", "Legends of the Fall", "Clan of the Cave Bear", and "The Edge", among others. He passed away in 2000. This video is a tribute to Bart, the Seuses, and the conservation nonprofit they created to protect habitat for wild grizzlies, The Vital Ground Foundation. Since its founding in 1990, Vital Ground has helped to protect and enhance over 416,000 acres of habitat in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska, and British Columbia. For more information or to make a donation to Vital Ground, visit: www.vitalground.org.
Vital Ground extends its sincere thanks to Manitou Motion Picture Company for the use of this short documentary. Visit them at: www.manitoupix.com.

This almost made me cry. So touching and moving and you don't see the kind of dedication these people showed to their animals and honestly they gave it right back. I still loved the end when bart just rolled over him in a hug. It is so heartbreaking that big lug died.

***** So, if you encountered thousands of bears daily instead of people, you were less likely to get attacked and killed? You must live in some very shitty and violent place. Get real! If were given two options, either to face an unknown man or a wild bear during a forest walk, which would you choose?

+Jusarius A Bear for sure. It's dangerous but u know who you deal with. Ask some ancient people what they would like to meet. Oh no the maya and much more are all dead because they met some other human. Because of us extinct animals and insects and plants, and u worry about a bear hahaha

Jusarius strangers should never be trusted, humans can be malevolent and deceitful westerners may not see that clearly today but go back 100 years and try to approach a nearby tribe...

You guys maybe forget. This wasn't truly a 'wild' bear. There was a bond there of trust, of caring, since it was tiny. In addition, the man himself said they have different personalities. Most strange humans won't attack you upon meeting them. Bears? Most don't want to. But depending on the circumstance, they are more likely to then a stranger. I for one would not want to meet a bear in the wild up close. There, they need their space.

dude! go own a bear cub! find a way to support that lifestyle!! get people to be enchanted and care about wildlife!!! we are fucking decimating animals around the globe, the only way stupid humans are going to care about them is if we make them family... seriously... think about how people react and treat dogs... dogs are the original scavengers... they followed people around until we started to take them seriously as a companion. we have the opportunity to raise huge animals now and with the polar ice caps melting the whole world is going to go through a biological swapping of heirachys. make that dream of taking care of a bear a reality. there's plenty of bears that are killed because they are too friendly and only scavenge from trash.... we have taught them this... lets go back to loving the world and animals.

One can clearly see how strong the bond between Bart and Doug is but the bear seems to accept his human friend as a bear. So their play seems pretty rough but nevertheless friendly. Remarkable friendship! RiP Bart :´(

It certainly takes a special person to bond with a wild animal. Like Kevin Richardson and his lions. You can see those lions look at him with nothing but affection. Just like Bart and Doug. From what I've seen thats the key is that bond. You can't beat em with whips and keep em locked in a cage. Its a trust thing . Not to be taken lightly. They trust their humans just as if they were part of their pack or pride. And its a deep bond. That only rare humans can get in touch with.

Research reports are all over the place. There is one that puts a Kodiak at over 2500 pounds and 14 feet tall. The largest Grizzly ever shot was in Alaska and weighed 2210 pounds and was 11"11'. Doug Sues is a big guy, over 6', in video Bart while sitting on his butt would easlily tower over Doug (but stayed hunched over) which would have made Bart around 9 to 10 feet while standing. Doug in his own words has put Bart anywhere between 1500 and 1800 pounds. Still pysically a bear among bears.

@nerblebun Bart was a Kodiak bear. Both grizzlies and Kodiaks are brown bears, but for some reason, Kodiaks are bigger. (Maybe salmon supplies?) Wiki says he weighed 1800 pounds, but I've also read 1500 in other places. This makes him as heavy as the extinct short-faced bear and nearly as tall. Short-faced bears had long legs for their size, so in my mind, Bart could still probably beat up a short-faced bear. :D Take that, extinct mega-fauna! ;)
