This is a great video. It gives you plenty of time to really see what makes Katy Ledecky so good. What stands out to me is just how good she is at minimizing the drag she gets from the water. Watch how still and how well aligned her torso is through the water. It would be interesting to watch her competitors and see if they can do that as well as she does. My guess is that not one of them can.

She has that body position not just form trying to be like that…..her high elbow catch is what allows for the propulsion and and a result she lies very high and flat in the water.

I would say she mostly used a 1 kick. Her right leg was barely kicking… I'm wondering why is she so effective with that lack of kicking motions?! UPD: now I see you've noticed that too. Good point!
@pasta847017 күн бұрын
likely because it's such a huge distance race. You'd be surprised how much energy you save when you minimise kicking, and how little it actually helps with forward propulsion.

Flipturn would be faster if they would roll-in head - means chin to torso, creates momentum for faster turn. Interesting: All those female swimmers do the kicks driven by hip; nobody swims in this race by full immersion ,bended elbow style! 👏🏻

And her streamlined body plus her ability to keep her body on top of water and sometimes I feel she even just have one tiny kick... and that require strong arm strength , most people's legs will sink if they simply follow the way she kicks....

@@adyshih legs will drag if you have poor alignment. it does not have anything to do with the effort you put into the kick

I was trying to say her strong upper body strength, certainly given with great alignment, hardly need her effort to kick.... when a lamb swimmer, i.e. a slow swimmer , my legs tend to sink and I thought or I was told because slower pace may cause leg to sink.....can one swim slow without a sinking legs? @@TD-sl3ee

But, why the 1 beat kick?
@KansaSCaymanS Жыл бұрын
To save energy (reduce oxygen consumption and lactic acid build-up) over long distances. She usually has such a commanding lead she doesn’t need to kick for propulsion.
@laikhuramrobertsingh6983 Жыл бұрын
Even though she is using 2 beat kick her arm stroke rate is really high when she swims.
@stuartlichty4250 Жыл бұрын
@@KansaSCaymanS note that a downward kick, on the same side as the arm pull, facilitates the roll/rotation to the opposite side. Also notice that she typically produces a stronger kick on the recovery (non-breathing) side, but not always, and sometimes the opposite. Weird. Also, I find that in a true two-beat kick, it’s difficult to keep your legs just drifting (and not kicking, as a follow-through reaction from the intentional kick.
