Yes. In all cases where the basis consists of more than one atom all the atoms cannot be at the lattice point. So in NaCl structure you can place Cl at the lattice point. But this will require Na to be placed elsewhere. Even in a single atom basis theoretically it is possible toplace your basis atom away from the lattice. But there is no benefit of such a choice and thus is not done usually.

Sir! What's the difference between crystal and Crystal structure?
@rajeshprasadlectures
@rajeshprasadlectures 2 жыл бұрын
Crystal is a general term indicating that the atoms are arranged periodically. The phrase ' crystal structure' describes the structure of that crystal in terms of lattice (Bravais lattice) and motif. So we can say that rock salt is a crystal. The crystal structure of rock salt is described by giving it Bravais lattice (FCC) and motif (Cl at 000 and Na at 1/2 1/2 1/2).

I would like to know the distinction between phase & crystal structure? Why do we need to differentiate crystal into phase, if it already have identify of specific crystal structure ?
@introductiontomaterialsscience
@introductiontomaterialsscience 4 жыл бұрын
Phase is a more general term. It could be solid, liquid or gas. A solid phase could be crystalline or amorphous. In case of a crystalline solid phase you need to specify its crystal structure. i hope this clarifies your doubt. If not please let me know.

I am confused....in definition u r telling crystal is periodic 3d repfesentation in a space but in diagram u r telling 3d arrangement is unit cell....truth is that a unit cell is a part of crystal structure so whatever arrangement in a unit cell is....same will be for crystal...so i think u must first differentiate unit cell and crystal then take unit cell as an example for 3d arrangement

sir without adding infinitely word the definition of crystal is wrong or right . because it may mean that free surfaces may exist there.
@introductiontomaterialsscience
@introductiontomaterialsscience 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, periodicity implies that all lattice points have identical neighbours. This means that there cannot be any free surface and the set of points should be infinite. Thus periodicity implies infinity.
