The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

Bobby declining the hair stuff commercial actually made me appreciate him more after all that nonsense he did... I mean, the true reason might have been "I don't want to be filmed", but the reason he said is so good, I wish everybody did that. "I never used it, so why would I advertise it?!" That is a word of principle.
@robmorr23
@robmorr23 3 жыл бұрын
Panda4247 I'm not sure Fischer declined millions of dollars. In the book Fischer Spassky 1992 by author Yasser seirawan Fischer is asked if I remember correctly was Fischer offered millions of dollars and Fischer said no. The question was asked by another journalist. This book can very expensive. Sometimes Amazon has it for around 50 dollars. It's usually 100 dollars or more.

I analyzed this game via the lichess engine and it seems that after Fischer made the inaccuracy on the 36th move which was Rd5 and Spassky replied with an amazing Re4, Fischer still has a -1.0 advantage which could have turned in to a win especially for someone like Fischer. I bet Fischer was so tired at that time that he gave up on the position or didn't give it enough thought since he could have gone with a Qc5 and keep the pressure

FWIW, I found where NYTimes has published an archived story online from 1972 reporting that Chester Fox company filed lawsuit against Bobby Fisher for 3.25 million dollars over the photography, but I tried for ten minutes and could not find anything online reporting on the outcome of the lawsuit.

I beg to differ, 3:38 pawn c3 can capture b2 pawn with check. So it's not necessary for queen to move immediately.

Hi, at 3:38 instead of playing Qb6 black plays c x b2 + and even if white takes with Kxb2 or Kd2 black plays Qb6+ or Qd7+ and in the next move the Knight with Qxe6. Doesn´t that work?

Brilliant defence from spassky. I think he had some moments of genius in this match but bobby was more stable if he could find more energy and force he would have won

There is an episode of Colombo where a paranoid "Fischer" American chess master kills an eastern European chess master because he felt he would lose. It's a good episode and I bet they made it after this crazy world chess championship.
