Recorded 4-6-18.
This is the Intercontinental Downtown Los Angeles/Wilshire Grand Tower in Los Angeles, CA. It features a compilation of all the elevators in this hotel, except for the mezzanine elevator, due to time constraints. I will have a follow-up video that will include that elevator. The main elevators are what we’re here for and they are Otis Skyrise Double-Deck Compass Plus Newer Series 4 elevators. It's a really complex elevator system. But damn! These elevators fly! Elevator KZbinrs claim that they can travel up to 1800 FPM. If you are ever in LA, this is a must-see! The hotel overall is beautiful and it is a lot more worth it than the US Bank Tower, which costs money. The Intercontinental is completely free and the staff is very welcoming. I really love the sky lobby and that is why the hotel is able to install double deck elevators!

Which KZbinrs claimed these go 1,200FPM? These are MUCH faster than that. These were originally 1,800FPM but as of last year, a new elevator safety regulation was passed with the state of California that no elevators within the state can exceed speeds of 1,600FPM due to seismic codes so these had to be reduced to that. So these travel 1,600FPM now. They were never 1,200. Maybe the office tower cabs or service ones are 1,200.

Oh I thought it was 1200. I misread other videos.

It’s all good. Citigroup, Two Cal Plaza and the 777 Towers go 1,200. Gas Company, Fig at Wilshire, Wells Fargo and US Bank all go 1,400. These, City National Towers and Bank of America all go 1,600.

Ridiculous... because going 200FPM slower is really going to make a difference when a nearby fault snaps. The elevators will go into seismic mode and quickly stop if there is any kind of noticeable shaking. The core of the building where these elevators are located, are surrounded by 4' thick walls comprised of steel and some of the densest concrete available at the time, which is not unlike what they did with the new WTC, which I should also point out was constructed by Turner as well. 1600FPM is by no means slow.. but still.. CA is so busy with these bullshit regulations that are unnecessary. Why not focus on buildings that are still vulnerable to quake damage? I live in a building that has a parking area that needs to be retrofitted (rest of the building should be fine) but instead of pressuring property owners more to retrofit, they are screwing around with other shit. There are still a good deal of un-reinforced masonry buildings and older steel frame building with welds that are prone to cracking. The Intercontinental Hotel building was put through a virtual simulation early on which consisted of a 7.8 quake which would cause the building to snake and they found the concrete in the core will crack from the steel frame beams smacking into the core, and also determined that the movement at the top of the building would be around 4g's, which is enough to make furniture fly around. The building was still able to withstand it, but they wanted better, so they redesigned it so there are shock absorbing beams roughly half way up the building, and that solved the issue and movement at the top will be drastically reduced. Since the building is so slender, the options to build it so its resistant to such strong quakes were more limited. When you get a big quake, this building and especially the US Bank tower are going to be the ones you will want to be in because of the way they were designed. When I rode these elevators back in late 2017 or early 2018, they really hauled ass.. The moved at the same speed as the ones in the Hancock building in Chicago which also happen to be 1800FPM, which was noticeably a good jump up in speed from the ones in Wilis (Sears) Tower.

So I haven’t ridden these since December but when I was on these a little over 6 months ago they were running the full 1,800 feet per minute. Believe it or not when I was interning back at OTIS in 2014, they were pushing for these to go 2,000 feet per minute like One WTC!!! These are apparently capable of going 2,000 but only did all 4 of them at that for a test run. Then they have fluctuated between speeds of 1,400, 1,600 and 1,800 feet a minute. I’ve speed tested different cars on different days where one day I got all 4 of them going their full 1,800 and another day 1 was going 1,400, 2 were going 1,600 and 1 was out of service. So it’s been all over. I was told by OTIS these are normally run at 1,800 still despite the bullshit ‘safety’ regulations but because they got an exclusive and somewhat secret permit that allows just this install do to so, these must still be advertiser on building websites and Skyscraper Center as 1,600. I don’t get what the big deal is and why California goes all pissy over such nonsense like the microscopic 200 feet a minute speed difference. That’s why all elevator techs HATE working in California because of their unnecessary overly strict codes and rules:(
