Bright Lights, Brilliant Minds: A Tale of Three Cities.
Paris 1928 - Episode 2/3
First broadcast: Aug 2014.
Dr James Fox tells the story of Paris in 1928. It was a city that attracted people dreaming of a better world after World War I. This was the year when the surrealists Magritte, Dali and Bunuel brought their bizarre new vision to the people, and when emigre writers and musicians such as Ernest Hemingway and George Gershwin came looking for inspiration.
Paris in 1928 was where black musicians and dancers like Josephine Baker found adulation, where Cole Porter took time off from partying to write Let's Do It, and where radical architect Le Corbusier planned a modernist utopia that involved pulling down much of Paris itself.

October 10 1997, I spent the weekend in Paris. I enjoyed the food and drink. The hotel was okay, but not impressive. The city itself and the people was cold, harsh and uninviting. I was very glad to get back to my home in Schwanfeld, Germany. I immediately went to my backyard patio and garden and relaxed as I gazed out over the roling farm hills in the distant haze as the farmer puttered on his tractor ploughing his fields. I was reminded of Van Gogh by the colors I witnessed. I did not miss Paris.

Thank you for this engaging documentary. I have been reading Stanley Karnow's account of his time in Paris, but having visuals is a plus! By the way, does anyone know the song beginning at 11:28?

Thank you for mentioning Stanley Karnow"s "Paris in the Fifties"..... I have a 1st edition and regularly re-read before my annual visits to my favorite city....It's a readable little gem, also enjoyable are the illustrations by Annette Karnow. And thank you this upload.

Absolute dribble about Paris being cheap in the 20s. One of the most expensive cities in the world at the time. Inflation was rampant.
