I do not understand why people would care who sat for the portrait or why Leonardo chose to use a certain person. The really interesting thing is how he painted the picture; how many layers, how many glazes? what did his pallet look like? How might the colors have looked when the painting was new? Those are the mysteries I'd like answered.

damien park The name Shakespeare was just a name until you've experienced his work, and then it's difficult to argue the substance is magnificent and a work of genius. When I went to the Met in NY, I saw Van Gogh paintings for example and experienced it. Then I understood why it's famous

Very educational and great video.I painted the Mona Lisa but I was getting into it too much so I stopped. I have it in one of my latest videos. I may continue at it later on or do one better. I never had lessons and very little experience experimenting in oil painting. it is very challenging and requires focus and patients. the trouble is the more you make it the way you like the more you get drawn in like an obsession or passion and you get too involved so you have to break away at a certain point.

I also think that “Mona Lisa”is a masterpiece that embodies the idea of "human love". The reasons are as follows. 　I believe that the work integrates at least four loving models: Lisa del Giocondo (Lisa Maria de Gherardini), Gian Giacomo Caprotti (Salai), the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ (Salvator Mundi). If you look closely, you can see the initials of each of these four people in the painting. 　The actual models are Riza and Salai. The right half of the body is Sarai and the left half is Riza. The letter 'LV' in the right eye means Leonardo, while the letter 'B' in the left eye probably means the 'B' of Bartolomeo, Riza's husband. 　The two bridges also indicate the Virgin Mary's initials (M), and the 'L2' on the bridge probably refers to 'Luke 2 of the Gospel according to Luke'. 　I think the winding road is a mirror letter, indicating the initials (S) of Jesus Christ (Salvator Mundi). Incidentally, if you look at this part of the picture in the mirror, you can see something like a "chalice". 　In other words, the painting is a fusion of two models, Sarai and Riza, who were surrounded by real love, superimposed on the symbols of charity, Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary respectively.

Brilliant programme - just pull you up on one thing - The renaissance had been happening in Northern Europe for over a hundered years before Giorgio Vasari was even born so it is hardly a claim that is backed up by evidence to claim that it started in Italy. (Evidence: Robert Campin; Rogier van der Weyden; Jacques Daret; Jan van Eyck; et al which were all producing renaissance work in the early to mid 1400's.) In fact, Giorgio Vasari's book basically slagged off the paintings of the north and people have been taken in by it ever since. The reality is that if his book had been objective, everybody would know that the renaissance started in the north and the Italian catch-up would be called the 'southern renaissance'.

Arguably, the first "Renaissance" painter was Giotto, whose life spanned the year 1300, He was preceded by the sculptor, Nicola Pisano, whose son Giovanni was his contemporary. Vasari gives Giotto as the first painter of the Renaissance. And this would be very hard to argue with, if you see the Renaissance in terms of a Rebirth of the Classical. Renaissance architecture began in Florence, and was the direct result of architects, in particular Brunelleschi, travel to Rome to look at Classical remains. The Early 1400s in Florence produced Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Uttrillo, Donatello, and Ghiberto. So, it really was not a case of the Renaissance beginning in the North and Italy "catching up". If the Renaissance is to be considered the Rebirth of the Classical, then it most definitely began in Florence, in art. THe development of oil painting, and carrying to such heights as were achieved in Northern Europe was a slow growth out of the Gothic, stylistically, and made possible by the perfecting of the art of oil painting. Northern Europe did not have a Classical past to which they returned. They had a glorious Gothic past which had not yet reached its full realisation in architecture when Brunelleschi built the purely Classical church of San LOrenzo, and Michelozzo built the Medici Riccardi Palace. What did Florence gain from the North, by way of painting? . In the late 1300s a style of painting known as "International Gothic" and in the mid 1400s, the use of oils for panel paintings. It was this development of a previously known, but little exploited technique that was influential.

The character we see in the famous portrait at the Louvre is not that of Lisa Gherardini, but that of Isabella of Aragon and Sforza, the daughter of King Alfonso II of Aragon of Naples. Isabella married her cousin Gian Galeazzo Sforza, the heir to the Duchy of Milan, to consolidate ties between the Kingdom of Naples and the Duchy of Milan. Leonardo da Vinci was at that time in service at the court of Ludovico Sforza of Milan, the uncle of Gian Galeazzo who was exercising the regency there. Isabella's young husband disappeared at the age of 25 without having been able to exercise power, it is said, assassinated on the orders of his uncle. The German historian Maike Vogt-Luerssen tells us that after her widowhood, Isabella and Leonardo formed a secret couple and had 5 children. So it is the portrait of his beloved that Leonardo da Vinci made, which explains why he took it to Amboise in France and kept it until the end of his life. There was therefore an emotional connection with Isabella that did not exist with Mona Lisa, whose portrait was just a commission. The research that I myself have done on the landscape indicates that it is based on an authentic place, which would confirm Maike Vogt-Luerssen's theory, as it undoubtedly pays tribute to the family origins of Isabella of Aragon. It seems obvious to me that the identity of the character in this portrait has been confused between an order actually received, that of the silk merchant's wife, and the portrait of Leonardo's companion, which is the one we see today at the Louvre and which he always kept with him, as when we keep a family photo today. All of this is probably well known by the so-called connoisseurs of Leonardo da Vinci, who do not want to recognize it, because they have spent their entire lives defending a version that they know is now outdated. As Mark Twain said, "It is easier to deceive people than to convince them that they have been deceived".

Mona Lisa was the devil in human form. In exchange for Leonardo's soul, a self portrait of the devil had to be painted. The devil would grant Leonardo artistic talents and fame that would last until the end of time. Leonardo was also a distant relative of Jesus Christ. It gets deeper. Believe me.
