The way the expert at the end compares the two chairs really rubbed me the wrong way. His fancy voice sounds almost comically put-on, and even though the real Chippendale chair is obviously much better quality it feels like he is putting down the other chair simple because it isn't a Chippendale. idk maybe I'm tripping

He’s a premier authority on Thomas Chippendale. Knowing how to judge Furniture like this is a drying craft. As a builder myself he’s who I look to for criticism. Like the movie sins guy of furniture.

@@williammcclanahan4518 just rewatched now, idk maybe I was a bit grumpy that day. The guy is passionate about his craft for sure and I admire that in anyone. I think I was trying to say it does come off a bit ostentatious and if the chair's authenticities were reversed then he'd find awesome stuff with the fake and talk down the real one. But the flatness of the carving on the fake is very obviously weaker in comparison

Oh no, some people really are in love with perfection and detail and the work of a master. And when u know exactly what and why it is happening in a piece and furniture, seeing something that tries to imitate it will be like 'oh dont u see that it's not the same? ` to them haha I enjoyed his analysis and can feel his passion for perfection. Personally I would get the fake chair for the style and be perfectly fine with it.

I had a beautiful Chippendale-inspired mahogany pedestal table, but my 130-lb. Lab made a huge leap to catch a fly above it and came right down with his full weight right on it! (As we yelled, No, Wiley, no)! Unfortunately, it couldn’t be repaired as all the legs had splayed out and broken, I was very sad. When going through antique stores, I keep an eye out for a similar table, there were lots of good-quality US-made dupes in the Late Victorian/Early 20th C. I hate modern-made furniture because it’s all that plasticky particle board, it’s crap.

Raise your hand if you found the pre-Chippendale furniture that was simpler, dovetails-exposed, and "chunky," far more pleasing than Chippendale's exquisite pieces.
@sutil50784 жыл бұрын
I agree, also can have little details but not too much motifs ..
@scottmartin77174 жыл бұрын
@Emma Hardesty The dovetails were super ragged and loose, so they were right about that. However, the rococo style Chippendale championed isn't for me either...I'd much prefer simpler, flatter designs such as the chest you speak of.

I hate that such an artist “ended his days in penury”, someone must have taken advantage of his talent!
