Do you need to apply RTV sealant when putting on the new gasket? As there was some RTV residue on the mating sirface and old gasket after removal

You have to use silicone sealant at the corners.Otherwise it will start leaking again in a short time.From the factory it has sealant.

you must remove the intake manifold in order to replace the PCV valve

My mazda 3 with the same engine is consuming oil as well, I didn't see any visible leak from the top Did you find out the reason behind your car's oil consumption? Was it the pcv?
