I was recently talking to an older gentleman (he's 93, I believe). I was telling him how I added compost that I made from leaves, grass, and kitchen scraps to my garden and topped it with leaves. He said, "That's the best thing you can do for your garden to build the soil." It made me feel so good to hear that from someone who has spent 80+ years farming and gardening. It made me feel like I'm on the right track. I'd love to sit and listen to him talk about it. I could listen all day.

Awesome! You can tell he has been around the block. My wife and I have a larger backyard than normal, about 1/3 of an acre, and it was just grass and a couple large live oak trees when we bought it 4 years ago. Now it has a pond, a chicken coop with 4 hens, 4 fruit trees, a 1,500 square foot wildflower patch, 12 cedar raised garden beds, and one bee hive. This year we got so much produce we were having to give it away and got into canning. Every year we build it even bigger in the winter for the next year. This winter we are building a couple herb pryamids and cultivating a 150 square foot area to grow sweet corn. Super excited for spring.

I loved your video and what you're doing. My wife and I bought a .7 acre property in 2019. It was all grass and I had no experience growing. Since then I went from growing in pots, to grow bags, to raised beds, to now growing directly in the ground. I learned so much about compost. I'm now working with nature instead of against it. Like yourselves, I now run a zero waste system. I put 20 fruit trees in the ground this year. 5 of those are Pawpaw. I don't have livestock yet but seeing your video I want to start with rabbits. I also grow indoors during the winter. I'm in zone 7a.

Same here I am still learning things too. I have expanded things this year and I started cleaning out my chicken coop a little at a time and I spread that on my gardens so by next spring it will be ready to plant. I live in Central Pennsylvania so the weather is really starting to get colder. I still have some apple mint to go pick and dehydrate for my tea for this winter. I am still learning how to make my own teas. I live in a small trailer court in the hills and I am fortunate that my landlord allows me to have chickens. Everything is a work in progress and I also want to start a compost area so I can use that too. My kids think I am crazy but when momma starts canning and they get some they love it. Be safe out there and god bless you guys.

This approach, with the chickens, I saw on an Amish woman's farm in Cuyahoga. She has a beautiful summer growing house, huge, but constructed like a tunnel but was varmint proof. She grew directly into the soil. During the winter she put the chickens in there to live and closed it up. The structure was huge. Maybe 25' by 50'. It was impressive so I took photos. During Spring she opened it up, had a big arbor at its entrance, and a little sitting area just inside to enjoy the scene. The chickens were moved into a pasture where her dogs did too protect them even from predator hawks. Her garden was so lush. Beans hung from her arbor, growing in such an abundance I felt spellbound. Okay I'll be quiet and will only say the type of farming shown here is extremely desirable. 💕

Glad it was helpful! some of the Bio char that they put down centuries ago it’s still extremely productive land and they were supposed to be savages
@itsamysticlife3500Ай бұрын
@PawpawSammyAlyBug honey, there was nothing savage about most of our people and cultures way back then. Have you ever heard of the Eastern Agricultural Complex? Our ancestors were developing hybrids from wild plants that most folk call weeds today. We made cloth from dozens of different plants and trees. Lightweight and warm. The oldest cloth in North America was found in the Windover Bog in Florida and has been dated to over 8000 years old. We also had lace or openwork fabric that was made like bobbin lace. It's older than any bobbin lace tradition in Europe by at least 400 years. We had a written language that everyone in the village could read (not the latter Cherokee stuff). The British royals have an example of it with the Muscogee migration story in native script on a woodland buffalo vellum. It's in one of the 3 royal warehouses that are each the size of a city block in London. They found the English translation but "can't find" the buffalo vellum that shows that the southeastern tribes were more advanced than they want people to know. Not bad for a bunch of supposed savages.

On the chicken "compost" I believe legally it has to be called "manure" if it hasn't heat cycled in a hot compost pile. Still a great soil ammendment, just a technicality if you're selling it. I believe it is federally, but I may be mistaken.

I had no idea it was regulating. I’m from a rule area and everybody uses it.
@zedmeinhardt34043 күн бұрын
@PawpawSammyAlyBug I just learned it while researching natural farming/market garden stuff. From what I understood, the regulation is meant to keep "raw manure" off crops close to harvest. But it's how it's been done for generations also. No judgements, just some info I learned.

It really reallly depends on the soil! If you have amazing soil you don't need much at all!
Do the worms and good fungi and stuff survive under the tarp or does it sterilize the soil? This sounds sorta like no till where you apply more compost on top except that you use the tarp to make it a clean slate each year. What sort of tarp is used? Could a piece of plywood work?

Go to my playlist oh no till gardening. There is a series of videos on this subject. Quick summary we started out small. we cut the grass laid cardboard on top of it compost on top of the cardboard and kept it wet period of winter grass roots disintegrated we should have clear openings into the ground. We repeated this year after year until we got large enough buy huge plastic mats cardboard, is best to start with and decay into the ground. Feed the worms it helps fertilize ground plastic sheets won’t.

Fear factor aside, it's simply preferable to grow your own food. No chemicals.

Wow. You guys are awesome! What an educational find. Such a wealth of information- thank you for sharing all these great tidbits! What do you feed your rabbits, ive been coming across more and more info that manure is killing our gardens/dirt because of the chemicals sprayed on the hay they are eating. Also, this is the first of your videos ive seen. If you dont already, id love to see a worm video.

Keep sharing, self sufficient, and healing the soil. A question about the dog food. Are you giving them a fat supplement? My understanding is rabbit meat is very lean Blessings to your family and farm. Liked and subscribed ❤

I read that dogs aren't made to handle much fat, because in the wild prey is lean meat.
