Can’t believe you made it through this without using one of my favorite CM excerpts. “Practically all schools are doing wonders. The schoolmaster is abroad in the land and we are educating 'our masters' with immense zeal and self-devotion. What we have reason to deplore is that after some eight or twelve years' brilliant teaching in school, the cinema show and the football field, polo or golf, satisfy the needs of our former pupils to whatever class they belong. We are filled with compassion when we detect the lifeless hand or leg, the artificial nose or jaw, that many a man has brought home as a consequence of the War. But many of our young men and women go about more seriously maimed than these. They are devoid of intellectual interests, history and poetry are without charm for them, the scientific work of the day is only slightly interesting, their 'job' and the social amenities they can secure are all that their life has for them. The maimed existence in which a man goes on from day to day without either nourishing or using his intellect, is causing anxiety to those interested in education, who know that after religion it is our chief concern, is, indeed, the necessary handmaid of religion.” Charlotte Mason

Autumn, thank you so much for all of these lovely recommendations. I definitely will add them to my wishlist. I noticed you stopped wearing glasses. You are so beautiful - both with glasses and without. Blessings.

Enjoy reading! Yes, they leave a terrible glare on my eyes which I find distracting. Since I don’t use notes for the videos, my sight isn’t too important. Ha! But my glasses are alive and well loved!

I've read that book many more than four times. I am readimg That Hideous Strength now. So I think I might give the Abolition of Man a skip this summer. Just finished Amusing ourselves to death. Wow that was something else. Your recommendations are great

I’m reading Abolition of Man right now. I went in blind not knowing what it was about and I wasn’t expecting it to have so much to say about education’s role in forming character. Loving it so far and enjoyed your commentary on it! 😄

Autumn, I have contemplated joining Common House for some time. This might just be the push for me to do it, because, like you said, I was one of those people that said "I cannot quite understand what you are saying there, sir" when I tried reading The Abolition of Man last year. 😂 While I am interested in joining, to be honest, I am also intimidated to join. My worry is that I will join and everything will go over my head. I have a desire to learn, but am wondering if I need an understanding of the topics you discuss in order to understand what is being discussed. I hope I stated my thoughts clearly.

This makes perfect sense! I think you’d find yourself in good company. Many members are brand new to classical ed! I try to create resources that meet the needs of that part of the journey. Plus, we have resources like the “Fellows’ Threads” wherein members ask and answer each other. Those are full of wisdom from the group!
