Yes the 4k FOV is softer than 4k HQ. The reason is that DJI downsamples the 5.5k FOV to 4k by 'pixel binning' essentially throwing away the 'extra pixels'. HQ 4k is a 1:1 readout. Most likely the RX100, for instance, 'supersamples' the 5.5k sensor and then 'down scales' it to 4k - this results in a higher quality image but needs more processing power.

Thanks for saying which one you like more instead of hiding behind the opinions of your comment section. I'd love to see the differences (if any) in shooting in low-light, like say night time city shots, between the Mavic 2 and the Phantom "Pro". Just want to add I think the Mavic 2 is also slightly better when one considers portability and price. I wish it had 4k/60 with a 1:1 FOV equal to that of the phantom but I'll sacrifice that no problem for the portability and overall awesomeness of the Mavic 2.

The Mavic has a rolling shutter VS the P4P has a mechanical shutter which is more preferred for mapping projects. But honestly tough to tell the difference.

It's seems that many people jump to conclusions by the better in camera auto saturation and contrast of the videos in the Phantom 4 Pro, when in reality a photographer will always shoot in a manual mode (not auto mode) with a more neutral dynamic setting so the original video or picture will be less colorful BUT will allow for more customized editing in post production so the in camera look of how the Phantom Pro 4 shoots is actually a negative based on this. In most videos you'll notice they're only shot in auto mode and not manual mode which better suits the M2P. In the M2P manual with a more neutral dynamic setting is always better because you can add the color and shadows back in, compared to P4P which has more saturation and contrast already with less dynamic range meaning it's harder to fine tune in post production when already applied in camera so you may lose detail or have blown out skies or highlights. So conclusion, if you are a beginner or don't do post production of your videos then the P4P will work better for you, but if you are looking for better customization for professional photography in my eyes the M2P can pull more from in post production. Also you should never have your ISO too high, it's better to fly past nearby lighting instead of cranking up the ISO, I would not recommend going above 1600 ISO and instead pull the shadows a little in post production. Hope that helps.

Hi Ben, I am a serious amateur photographer and only interested in images. Once both mavics were launched I thought that my option was "no brainer" with mavic 2 Pro but after seeing a lot of video comparisons and the fact that M2Z has the option of high resolution images now I am very confusing what would be the right option for me. this was the drone I wanted 6 months ago for a job but there was nothing but the phantom 4 pro for the 1 inch. I love the portability and rock solid stability of the Mavic 2. the P4P is for when I need 4K60fps.

I now own both and this is just my opinion. The footage is great from both, colours can be altered post so I don't think that should be a deciding issue. What I like about the mavic is that the HQ lets you get closer. As I shoot a lot of landscapes this will be great for me. I can use the full FOV or the HQ to get tighter shots. The main thing for me is portability. The P4P is too big to fit in my camera bag. As a result I would always take the mavic air with me everywhere. Now I get to take a small drone with the same/better camera as my P4P. I can see myself selling both the mavic air & P4 just because of these reasons.

I like the option of having both. I shoot landscape for PR videos for the city and while the P4 is awesome i sometimes feel its too far from the subject, such as a waterfall. I like the HQ mode on mavic as it now gives me the option to get a bit closer and still keep it in 4k. Last year i used an inspire with various lenses and being able to get closer to the subject made it sooooo much better. Ive still only been out a few times with the mavic so its early days but the good camera and protability will surely make it my go to drone.

I would think your PC would be fine. I do my video work on my mac book 2016 which has 16g RAM and an i7 and its fine. I would have thought your PC would handle it no problem. Premier Pro is known for being a bit clunky (on Mac any way) If you have any issues try color grading in the free version of Davinci Resolve.

@David Eberhardt you need to find out what revision of i7 you have. You'll probably find if it's an older i7 that it won't do hardware decoding of h.265 either 8 or 10 bit. Doing this in software will be a nightmare.

Phantom 4 colors are definitely better on my oppinion. Clouds on Mavic 2 Pro looks like monocromoe.

Thanks for this great comparison. I prefer the less saturated look of the m2 in combination with the higher dynamic range. More versatile in post... Would be good to know how the m2 holds up in terms of noise or compression artifacts compared to the Sony RX100.

20MP Sensor is way bigger than 4k so its realy simple to make a "crop" looking HQ and a FOV mode. Im pretty sure they dont make 20MP recording to downsize it to 4k...but maybe they do it i dont know.

I shoot real estate stills. The clouds and sky look the best (to me) with the Phantom 4, actually no comparison. However, I don't want to purchase a discontinued platform. Therefore, could someone let me know if the Mavic2P images shot in RAW be fixed to my liking in post? Thanks!

Not in video mode but in photo mode.. but it can film in dlog 10 bit so grading the footage in post is easy

I would give Mavic "A-" and P4 an "A". For "Video" 60FPS in 4k P4 wins all the way. Drones are mostly used for video and not still shots. Again for pro video, P4 does a better video, IMHO

Great information! Wow I didn't know the Mavic Pro 2 was limited to 4K @ 30FPS, the other Reviewers I watched missed it. The 4K interpolation needs work and I think they need a firmware update to address those inconsistent saturation and exposure issues.

that's it - nice to have, as you said (60 fps at 4k) but not more than that. Slowing down drone footage that already can be so slow and smooth and when yes then do you really need it in for 4k? So much slowed footage around that people are gradually getting sick of it. So for me that's not an issue at all

It all comes down to what you want to do with the footage after you filmed it. If you can/want to do post production, Mavic 2 pro beats the phantom 4 in every aspect (yes even when it comes to framerate, since 60fps 2.7K with 10-bit color upscaled to 4K is preferable over 4K 60fps 8-bit color). If you don´t want to do any post production and just edit/post the videos... Then sure, go for Phantom 4 pro

Only thing that is a real deal breaker for me on the Mavic is the micro-stutter one sees from time to time. It's highly distracting and can ruin a cinematic shot... then there's also the matter of the FOV reduced due to overheating and always having to have a fully charged phone ready for the M2 etc. but the main thing for me is the stutter.

Yeh, I'm also surprised that the 4K HQ option looks a lot better! I'm so glad it's there though because the P4P doesn't have that and it's the same sensor. So that's a great add on. Like an APS-C mode on full frame cameras. I was also surprised that it looks better because Sony is so good at oversampling their 6K footage to get 4K footage and it looks incredible. The thing is, I think this is very hard to do well without pixel binning. Which is also the exact reason that the Canon EOS R crops in 4K. Canon said the full frame 4K just didn't look good enough, so I think they weren't able to do the oversampling as well as Sony. It's clearly pretty difficult.

DJI is really putting a leash on the Mavic 2 pro and zoom..both have a monster image processor the Ambarella H-3...This image processor can do 4K@120 fps and 8K@30(I know the 1" sony sensor can only do max 5K)

Portability of the Mavic 2 is desire only if you are planning to walk a few miles in search for subjects to shoot . Most of the time ; you find a good place to park your vehicle 🚗 very close to the scene , and portability is not an issue with the P4 at that point .

It's funny that the moment the p4p came out there were no complaints, now all of a sudden it wiggles too much in the air when there's wind. Ridiculous. So the p4p is too saturated compared to the mavic but the Sony image with all that contrast looks better than the mavic in your opinion. Unless your blind that mavic looks inferior.
