I questioned whether the gift of prophecy is still active today because I think of prophecy as predicting future events. I would be wary of someone predicting a future event not already predicted and written about in the Bible. I guess prophecy is really special encouragement from God that is backed by scripture. But could not that also be the gift of exhortation or teaching? Also, I wonder what Paul means when he tells us to pursue special gifts because gifts are given by the Holy Spirit. We don’t get to choose what gift we are given.

Here's my upside down answer... Paul didn't tell us to pursue anything 😉 He told the Believers in Corinth to pursue the gifts and then went further to say prophecy above tongues which can give us some clues, and further research can show us what their culture was like, and that they were so focused on themselves individually and the gifts they had, rather than the whole body of Christ, and love. I know that's a weird way to answer your question, but to hopefully encourage your understanding too. Because when we get to Paul's letters to Ephesians, Galatians, Colossians... he gives different instructions there too because of their communities and their struggles. And yes, I agree with you, that prophecy is a special encouragement backed by Scripture, often of who God is. There's a long winded response that may leave you with even more questions lol... ❤️🙏🏻

Is Paul saying that all of us Believers have one of these two special abilities? I prayed in tongues (at home alone) once many, many years ago but had no idea what I was praying. I did it two days in a row but have never had that experience again to this day. Was that my special ability or just the Holy Spirit interceding for and through me?

That's a great question. Remember that in this letter, Paul is speaking to the Believers in Corinth. There are other gifts listed in other letters to other people in other cities 😉 If it's something you desire, seek for that again, and use it more and more. With more understanding from this chapter, let God know your desires for His gifts. 🙏🏻
