As much as everyone focuses on trying to fix survival, I feel that battle simulations are under-utilized outside of Weaponscore competitions. Especially since we have everything needed to do them and even more once the AI grid update is released.

This is a bottomless well of potential content, measuring popular capital ships against popular strike craft. Ideally, there would be several runs, allowing each side to iterate on their tactics. Throw away the first few trials, and count the best of the final 3, 5 or whatever. Lastly, summarize what each side thought was working or not working in terms of both design and tactics.

If some Heavy Fighters with Assault Cannons were attacking the Ressults would quite different, bcs Assault Cannon Shells are able to Damage an Gatling Turret enough that’s it’s unusable after a Singe Hit

Assault canons are slow to reload and their ammo explodes when hit. The attacking fighter would have to hope they didn't catch any returning fire or and have their magazines explode or they'd have to carry a limited supply of ammo to minimize secondary explosions. If the fighter missed their first shots a large grid gatling turret would rip them apart long before they finished reloading.

You also run into ammo storage issues. Anything larger than autocannon magazines quickly take up storage space on small grids

great idea to test ship classes in a realistic fight, in my mind, the sum of the CPU of the ships involved should be the measure to set up the battles, but the number of players needed to control the ships is also a big factor in faction v faction warfare

Really these fighters were never gonna win with just gatlings guns, but would provide a lot more challenge and damage if they were using autocannons. Since the gatling does so little damage against armor.

I am more of an AA cruiser person then AA Corvette person, this is due to the image of a big ship creating walls of bullets that fighters crash into trying to get to their real targets is pretty cool in my mind.

Yeah. While corvettes are definitely good as small dedicated AA ships I’d personally make a frigate subtype the “AA Frigate” or “Flak Frigate” which is the primary AA ship for fleets, battlegroups, etc So corvettes can serve as AA escort for smaller groups and may usually get involved in the fighter dogfights due to their agility while the AA/Flak frigates stick with the main fleet and protect the larger ships.

I mean that's entirely fair. Comes down to the realism aesthetic you want for your fleet building. If you make a single AA cruiser with the firepower of like 5 Corvettes, that's still only one target If something hits that cruiser, disables it's engines, you've lost 5 Corvettes worth of AA If you make 5 Corvettes, one gets hit, you have lost 1 Corvette worth of AA, but still have 4 That being said, it's Space Engineers, not necessarily real world economics So build whatever the fuck you want.

Love this video, I want more like it! I would love to see a video of a corvette defending against bombers (in my lore bombers are small grids specifically designed for fast strikes on large grids. Typically to soften large grids before the main engagement happens.) Maybe have a corvette guarding a large grid target ship and have the bombers complete strikes against the target?

Great video! Rather than a test of different ship types, I'd like to see tests of strategy and tactics. When they were running the weapon core tournaments, that was what I liked to see the most. The test in escort techniques, attack techniques (is it better to hit a turreted ship from multiple sides or all on one side?), force or weapons mix (how would your Corvette do with assault cannons instead of Gatling?), and prioritization of fleet equipment.

They didn't just reduce the damage of interior turrets, they also cut the range. The interior turret's range has been reduced to 400m. It used to be 800m. This further reduced their effectiveness against fighters. I had a ship set up with a large number of interior turrets for defense against drones (I usually keep drones turned off...), and it got in trouble because the drones had more range than the majority of the ship's weapons. It had, I think, only 2 Gatling turrets.

The classifications of ships have always been fluid depending on the time and organization designing and employing them. Logically, a fighter needs a stationary base or carrier which limits range or requires massive resources. In a real word situations, lighter ships like corvettes and frigates have had the carrying capacity, for supplies and fuel, and therefore longer range, to perform long term patrol or infiltration missions, without needing an expensive carrier.

The missile turret seemed to do all of the heavy lifting. Having one or two more would have ended the battle very quickly in my opinion. A hit with a gatling gun will damage just one block. You have to hit that block repeatedly for it to fail. So gatlings spread damage too thin to be effective. The missiles hit hard even if not as often. One missile hit was a critical knockout, leaving the attacking force down a complete set of gatlings and rockets.

Right now there aren’t enough players in most servers for large battles, plus block limits don’t allow for proper fleet combat. Even in the best case scenario of a lot of people in a faction and good block limits (or no limits at all), battles tend to end poorly or are boring because no one wanted to go mine for the resources to make more ships, ammo, etc etc. One good example is a 2-faction combat server I played on, every battle would rarely involve more than 4 small ships and would devolve into ramming because no one brought enough ammo… planetary battles are just a no, you can immobilize a tank in 1 hit because wheels are made of paper. Proper tank tracks would be nice, more durable but slower.

A torpedo bomber idea may be the answer. Not necessarily a torpedo by design, but something in the general spirit of a light-ish fighter carrying a weapon or two intended to substantially damage larger vessels. A cannon, railgun, or actual torpedo could suit this role, practicality dictating final choice.

I always recommend gunships for survival solo as they pack a punch for a cheap price, but a frigate is also a good choice as they give u more room and sometimes a hangar, bit more self sufficient

This video highlights perfectly the age-old contest with wet-navy vessels. Do you build bigger ones, but fewer of them due to cost? Do you build smaller ones at the risk of them being more fragile? Or short-range defensive vessels (cheaper due to the lack of a Jump Drive) that are great at defending a fixed point but unable to respond at any great distance? I would like to see a breakdown, logistically, of the Verona versus 6 of the fighters and a ship capable of carrying them to the battlefield. Which side costs more resources to field? Which one requires less manpower to operate properly? These are just some of the decisions that Command has to make before committing to battle. Very well done!

Corvettes are more of a escort type warship so ideally you'd want multiple corvettes working together or corvettes with other ship types, the damage that we see here could be much less if the corvette was operating as part of a fleet or battle group

I think one of the added benefits of fighters is their cost compared to large grid ships. With a good printable design you wouldn’t mind throwing away a squadron to take down a large grid ship.

IMHO the best use of small grid against large grid are long range engagements using Warfare 2 weapons, mainly the railgun and assault cannon. You can pelt a large grid ships at ~1km distances with those weapons that auto-turrets can't reliably hit back at. The person in the large grid ship is either forced to close range with each individual fighter closer then 800 meters to get the lower range turrets like the gatling turrets and missile turrets to fire back or the large grid ship is forced to stay at range and allocate a second crew member to manually control a large caliber turret to have any chance of hitting back. My one point of discussion regarding this video, is calling it a corvette, instead of a gunboat or gunship. I don't think it quite fits into classical corvette rolls; while it does fit into gunboat or gunship rolls. Typically, a corvette has always been (to me,) a more utilitarian hybrid of a ship. Carrying some measure of both anti-capital, and anti-starfighter/pdw, while retaining some room for cargo and maybe even other systems (expanded comms/sensors, VIP transport suites, etc...) While Gunboats and Gunships really do tend to fit into the anti-starfighter/pdw roll that you've designed the Verona for. But, it is your universe, and if that is what you chose to classify as a corvette, than that is absolutely ok. Neat battle though. I wonder how the fighters would do with turreted weapons, allowing for more stand-off maneuverability at the cost of relying on AI targeting?

Here in 2024 I only use gatling guns for turrets or early game when resources are at a premium on fighters. I prefer to use 2-4 autocannons, which will tear up any lightly armored ship.

One bit of a criticism. The corvette didn't really maneuver or try anything. I would add that using tactics to force enemies into where you want them would be a better way to display. Without proper tactics, many ships are about useless vs. other ships of similar or some about worse if the worse ship deploys good tactics. I've watched as small ships brawl with battle ships because of good use of tactics. Edit: I mean it looked as if there was a lack of tactics, it moved, but not in some fancy tactic

I have a question to anyone who knows, I've seen in a few of Lunar Kolony's videos to make turrets stagger fire, e.g. when referencing the front of a Destroyer ship to have a bunch of Artillery Turrets that fire front to back for a barrage instead of all at once. How do I do this? I've been looking through Google and found a sript but it only works for static weapons, how do I accomplish this for turrets?

This would've had a different outcome if the interceptors had utilized proper combat practice. When attacking a turreted target, you need to spin around while thrusting either up or down so as to throw off turret targeting. I didn't see any of those interceptors using that maneuver, so no wonder they all were instantly annihilated. Also, let's be realistic here; those interceptors are undergunned. Only 4 gatlings is not enough for a fighter to be taken seriously. I'd say 6 or 8 for a craft of that size is what you'd actually see in real combat. And while this wasn't necessarily the point of the exercise, an interceptor should never be going anywhere near a Corvette. Interceptors are almost exclusively built for going after other small craft. It would be more fair to use proper fighters as opposed to interceptors, as fighters typically have some semblance of anti-ship capability. Other than that, it was a cool and well-produced video. Battle was also cool. Keep up the good work 👍

I have to say, by your own terminology this was stacked in the favor of the corvette. Interceptors aren't what a corvette is supposed to screen against, they're supposed to screen against Bombers, Missiles, attack craft, and assault transports. Interceptors likewise share these same targets, and aren't supposed to fight corvettes. That's just my two cents here. Most of my small craft DO NOT qualify as interceptors, due to their heavy armament and armor. This is why I build corvettes and screening destroyers.

In your video I believe you said destroyers should be able to fight capital ships with heavy weapons and high maneuverability Why not put your dreadnought against a groups of 3 destroyers and see what kind of damage they can dish out

spinning would help to spread damage over armor more without fighters locking on weapons and destroying them

Hmm. My head canon Corvette should be able to be at least punch up 1 level up of it own. On 1v1 vs frigate no maybe a 3v1 With the outcome should be 1 dead 1 heavy damage 1 "damage" (unknown how much)

No matter the results, all the ships at the end of the battle are scrap witch is not worth fixing.

the verona could have avoided alot of damage by using better stratagies (turn and burn/spin to win) and could probably win against 9 max fighters with minimal damage
