Absolutely crushed it dude! Appreciate the valuable spot selection analysis. This was a great day to let the video go a little longer to soak up the beauty of that wild place. Agree with all your comments regarding protecting these rivers and the surrounding watersheds. It's important to vote this November for leaders who will value and protect them.
@RivermanTV-3 ай бұрын
I'm sure you've noticed, but I think the analysis is very important especially on a completely new body of water. I was a little hesitant about making a longer video but I just felt I couldn't cut some footage out because the river was just so beautiful. It was hard enough getting it down to around 30 mins! I wouldn't think something as simple as access to clean public waters would be politicized but here we are 😑. Totally agree.

SHEEESH!! ya'll put on a freakin' CLINIC out there! Those river smallies truly never get old and with how far you guys floated, you definitely tapped into those areas that really hardly ever see fishermen/women. So cool!
@RivermanTV-3 ай бұрын
It felt good to get a few rewards for putting in some work. This float was an audible and I'm so glad we did it instead of another section we were mulling over. There was definitely a point upstream of the flowage that boats (even jet boats I think) couldn't get through so it for sure felt untapped. Problem was that there was so much water to cover I felt like we barely scratched the surface in the afternoon/evening.

Awesome stuff! I just stumbled on your channel the other day and love how mindful and intellectual you are about analyzing the water and fish behavior. My buds and I do the same thing wading the DuPage and Des Plaines rivers here in Northern Illinois. We’ve learned a ton about these waterways in the last couple years because we keep asking questions and looking for answers. I also love the passion you have for the stewardship of these places. Keep up the great work. I don’t have a huge list of channels that I follow but the list just grew by one.

Welcome fellow fish geek! You're safe here. I know both the DuPage and Des Plaines pretty well. They can be super fun places at certain points in the year. I may have to credit the Dupe for igniting my interest in fishing again after years away. I'm glad to have you along and I'm always happy to dive deep into fishing with anyone that turns up around here.

Hello Riverman what a great video and beautiful area with some great smallies. I love the way you break down the river and what to look for. Very helpful. I have fished the Wisconsin river a few times up in the Merrill area. It's also a nice area with a few muskies thrown in. I do know parts of the area where you were fishing although not well enough to do on my own. That big rapid kind of scared me off. Just wondering how you managed to get around it safely in a kayak? Is there another easier option to get around the rapid or did you have to portage? I would probably be floating in a small raft if I decided to do it. I would love to float that section someday.
@RivermanTV-2 ай бұрын
Hey there - glad you got something out of this video! As for the rapids, you can avoid them by keeping right at the big island. The water is still swift but it is very manageable. There are some other quicker runs further downstream but none of it is very daunting. I've also done some of the river downstream of Merrill. Saw some giant musky and broke one off down there. Cool area I've been meaning to get back to.

Hey there. Got my first fishing kayak this summer. Been doing a lot of river fishing. I bring my one rod with me (medium light) and do a lot of ned rigs etc. I have one more medium rod that I need to get a reel for so I can bring two rods. I was thinking since I use my medium light for ned rig etc I should use the medium for top water? What would you suggest I should do/lures. Thanks man!
@zachh-w3s3 ай бұрын
I only want to bring two rods for now as I am really just beginning to kayak fish in rivers. I live in ontario. So if my medium light I use for ned rig, 4" wacky, small swimbaits etc. what is my best bet for my medium rod 1/4 - 3/4 oz rating as far as what I should run on it. Thanks man! I am learning lots from your channel
@RivermanTV-3 ай бұрын
I think you could use that rod for throwing something like a topwater popper, crankbait, and open hook or weedless swimbait. I really like throwing 3/16 to 1/4oz swimbaits on my medium spinning setup in the spring and fall. It's super versatile though so I often use it for hard and soft jerkbaits too.

Kayak tournaments go by length so it's just a habit. My scale is also currently in another kayak. Most of time on the river I'm catching fish between 3-5 pounds which I've caught a lot of and have a pretty good feel for.

Thanks for vids. How does your anchor system work? I fish outa a canoe and struggle with it there must be a better way.
@RivermanTV-3 ай бұрын
It's called an Anchor Wizard. It's track mounted and I just have eyelets on tracks for the cord to run through and keep it out of the way. If you could mount some sort of yak attack track on your canoe, you could pretty much do the same thing. I'm not sure how much mounting surface you'd have in a canoe though.
