The popiah (spring roll) you ate has a veggie filling from marinated white turnips. In Malay, sengkuang. It's a standard filling in fried popiah. Simple but delicious. Better if there's a chilli sauce dip!

Honestly, I prefer kampung durian more than the hybrid species. The older the tree will bring authentic flavour to the maximum. Especially from Bukit Gantang Perak.

As a kid in the late 70's growing up in KL, I would look forward to balik kampung to Penang during fruit season. My late grandfather stayed on a 3 acre land with fruit trees which include rambutan, manggis, durian, pulasan, coconut, cashew, ciku, belimbing, cempedak, nangka and cocoa trees... he also had meat chicken and kampung chicken. During durian season we would stay up in tthe hut listening for the durian dropping at night. ❤

The spring roll is also called "Poh Piah" , next time try to dip it into your Asam Laksa soup , it will blow your mind ....😊

For Penang people after we finished the laksa noodle, the leftover soup we will dip with the Crispy Spring Rolls (Popiah) to suck up the remaining laksa soup and eat it together. We Penang people will not left any of the laksa soup unfinished.

that crispy thing is called "popiah", also known as spring roll but the fried version. Fun fact - you can even find it at the IKEA restaurant!

The fillings fir spring roll is usually bangkuang/ jicama, a rype of turnip (カブ). If you have tried Popiah, the main filling is bangkuang/jicama it's the same, only that this type is fried.

welcome back to penang! im glad ure back in balik pulau for durians despite of your bad experience with the toilet before 😅. balik pulau is always on heavy traffic when it’s durian season. if you guys are still here, i would like to recommend u guys to try mee che meh in pondok upeh, balik pulau. it is a small local stall, but i really like it their mee rebus & mee goreng 👍 and also please try cendol at astaka bayan baru

the "white radish" strip is called jimaca - stir fry till cooked, squeezed dry and wrapped in the spring roll skin, before deep frying... they are usually used raw, in fruit rojak too

I like the way , jimmy rolled his eyes to i chang to indicate the shop has only local patrons. So cheekily cute.😂😂. Just wondering, you both don't work in japan? You seem forever here in malaysia.😆.Anyway its always a pleasure watching your travel videos. That char kueh teow has only 2 miserable prawns. I hate it when food vendors are stingy and calculative but charge high prices. Enjoy life to the fullest, if you have the time, money and opportunity. Great to see you in Penang! One of my favorite beverages there is amla xi moi, a tart and sweet fruit blended with water and a Chinese salty plum added. So refreshing! Usually from the juice carts or the beverage vendor at the kopitiam. Enjoy your visit! ~Tad

Ichang, Jimmy, you should really try the Char Koay Teow at Kampung Jawa (Bayan Lepas). The kopitiam name is Wahong Cafe. Make sure you go before 11am - they are usually sold out by that time!

Jimmy & iChang, if ever you go back to Terengganu, please review this place called Mr Celup Tepung Station (MCTS) They do seafood celup tepung/battered/tempura I think Japanese people would like these kinds of food Or this place called Pok Nong Celup Tepung Also please take the scenic coastal road, it is a good driving road This coastal road from Pahang all the way to Kelantan almost the entire length of Terengganu

Kim Seng Kopitiam! Almost never miss going here each time I go to Penang! However, I go here for their "Siam Laksa" (a.k.a. "Lemak Laksa"). You can try this the next time you come back here.

hi all and iChang and Jimmy, thanks for showing 2 good place which i never been there before. i only been to penang twice but never really explore the place properly. durian is a big thing for my parent but ok for me and my sibling haha. durian is nothing special for me but yeah really important and is amust eat food for my parent.its like they treat durian like a gold more important than us haha. when you gping to visit Sarawak aha, festival Gawai is on 1June i think you missed it...i missed my home Sarawak...

Deep fried roll is call popiah. You can eat it on its own or we usually put inside the laksa so it will pick up the laksa soup. That's how penangite eat laksa with popiah
