Get a cookie tin or a cleaned out metal paint bucket, make a small carpenter nail sized hole in the lid put wood strips like Popsicle sticks or paper in. Close the lid put that on a fire for 15 minutes or more till the fire burns out. Inside will be charcoal perfect for your projects. If you use 95% rubbing alcohol instead of water you can just let it evaporate away after blending and you will not get the mineral contaminates if you used tap water.

material resistance is normalized to the length and cross-sectional area of measurement. The 'acceptable' chunks of charcoal might have had the same resistance as the rejected ones. If they truly do vary between chunks, then you need to measure with the same distance between probes.

Lampblack for painters works also very nice. Does have a much lower Resistance in the 50 to 100 Ohm range ! Is much better than Charcoal ! Surely the silvery Graphite is still the best as it can go to around 10 to 20 Ohms this way, but it is more expensive and sometimes hard to get . You can also use big graphite Pencils for painters and blend them down. Measure the resistance before buying them with a digital Multimeter... If you only have charcoal, use the process as shown here, so you only take the better conductive parts and then you can also Hammer them into a rod in an iron tube and compress the powder very much and then heat it red hot glowing, that will also enhance conductivity... sometimes it is just okay to hammer it down and compress it very much...but with glowing it also red hot makes a real graphite out of it...but don´t let it completely burn, otherwise you will only have white ash left....After that you can grind it or blend it down again to powder and mix it with water and glue as it is shown in this video and then you have a nice much more conductive paint... or use the heated rods you made with it as electrodes for batteries...or press the powder into Plates for even higher surface battery or Supercap electrodes.... Hope this helps. Regards , Stefan.

Uhhhh, when measuring resistance on multiple pieces you have to keep the probes the same distance apart. you keep measuring from the sides of different sized pieces. Sometime halving or doubling the distance from the previous measurement.

Use just enough water to make a paste. They won't mix without surfactant, so for every 1tsp of water, add a few drops of dish soap. Then thin it out with a very small amount of paint or glue and add alcohol if you need to thin it out further. This will also speed up the drying process. Then, brush it onto the surface you desire and let dry.

@bcnloft8 жыл бұрын
Did you try clear, water based glue? Did you test the conductivity of charcoal before blending? Did you check the conductivity of the mix before adding glue? It could be that the pieces of charcoal you used were not burnt enough and the quantity of the carbon element is not large, did you used wooden charcoal? In many countries there is stone charcoal which pretty sure won't work with the blender :)

Active carbon and silver is good conductive materials which I've used. I've used silicone and super glue as adhasive. I've added metals as high capacity. However after glue is dried since surface of this paste is glue this paste does not becomes conductive. I wonder how can achive this conductive ink as video. It's impossible since surface of paste is polymer!

+fatih atatug i don't think super glue works, probably silicon either, the ink worked very well with clear, transparent water based glue as shown in the video, probably both super glue and silicon have chemicals that create a structure that is very resistant to electricity, like polymers that are completely non conductive, sorry

You might improve your chances of making your charcoal better conductive by limiting access to air. Wrap a dried block of wood in aluminum foil, better yet, fill a steel paint can and let it vent volitals, hydrogen, and carbon monoxides as the wood undergoes pyrolysis to charcoal. You need to ensure the fire heats the can long enough to complete the process.

Have you tried cyanoacrylate or super glue the slower curing type applied first not blended with the powdered conductive charcoal. Then before it dries shake the conductive dust over the glue from a salt shaker. I would think creating rust powder from a steel wool pad,or copper chore boy dampened with vinegar then dried and pulled apart and mixed with the chared dust would improve conductivity. One might also give clear nail polish a try using the paint and shake method.
