The #1 food plot to grow and hold mature whitetail bucks on your farm...Alfalfa. This plot is management intense and high dollar, but is worth the investment. Alfalfa has some of the highest protein content of all the food sources and bucks absolutely love it. In this video I show you the step by step process of starting an alfalfa food plot for whitetail deer hunting. A how to guide with all the details included.

Great information on preparing and conditioning the soil before planting......and really useful tip on the battery operated shop vacuum.

If you don't have a big tractor use a subsoiler, it will do the same thing, as a chisel plow, and use a 4 inch steel pipe chained behind the disk to break up the clods and level up any high spots. Two chains, hooked at the ends of the pipe incase you have trees, or obstacles.

Thanks for watching and commenting! It’s a management intensive plot, but in my opinion it’s worth the extra hassle!

Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes I can….alfalfa is very sensitive to insects….it’s a good idea to hit it with insecticide 2-3 times a year.

Shop vac tip!! nice. Alfalfa is always intriguing to me. Early season the deer seem to hammer it almost like soybeans but then not as attractive later on. For the investment, management, prep, and maintenance needed for alfalfa I'm not sure it's worthy of a #1 spot in the food plot ranks. Appreciate the video though.

Brandon thanks for watching and commenting! I agree…it’s super beneficial to the herd, very high protein levels, deer love it, but like you said it’s only issue is after a hard freeze it’s pretty much done for the year! Thanks have a good day!

I've got the same old International Chisel plow you have and about the same old disc. I had to turn up the 2 outside chisel plow points for my tractor to pull it, but still works like a champ!!! Do you still do any moldboard plowing?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! Those were some popular items back in the day! I try not to use the breaking plow anymore….I like the chisel better and I don’t think the ground washes as bad wirh a chisel.

What was you row spacing? I want to drill alfalfa next year
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! 7.5” row spacing is pretty much a standard for drills, it’s management intensive but I think it’s worth it!
@carrollsanders9376
@carrollsanders9376 10 ай бұрын
Most rental drills are 7.5 that gives plenty of room for growth of the plants, you can get drills in 6 inch, if you need wider rows use tape over the feed slots too the tubes. I planted Alfalfa and Arrow leaf with a drill just the other day, the Arrowleaf will die out durring winter, as it gets cold but is highly attractive for fall hunting.

Hey Wes - how does that county no-till drill get transported to your property..do you have to get it with a trailer or do they deliver?

Thanks for watching and commenting! You just need a hitch with a pin and it pulls behind a pickup truck. Mine was about 10 miles away taking back country roads. It actually pulls pretty good, I kept it at 25 and under, and it’s not to bad going down the road since it’s only about 7-8 feet wide….just a little wider than my f150 pickup.

Gonna sound a bit stupid here but if P is not mobile in the soil how does it benefit people that are completely no-till. Does the P stay on top of the soil all the time?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 10 ай бұрын
Roy thanks for watching and commenting! That’s not a stupid question at all. P just doesn’t move through the soil profile like a lot of nutrients do….it will eventually go down but it takes a long period of time for it to….with something like nitrogen it’s almost immediately going to move down with a rain event. That’s why I fertilizer every year….continuously move that p down through the soil and adding more every year. Hope that makes sense.
