Is it possible for an athlete to convert to Speed jumper to power jumper or power jumper to speed jumper?
@jumpguyty5 жыл бұрын
mikael t deleon with patience and persistence a technique can of course be learned. That being said we all tend to gravitate to one or the other for a variety of physiological and experiential reasons. Thanks for your question!

I have changed between the two subconsciously as my physique and current sport has changed over the years. Do I think that if you were to make the intention of it then for sure. However the biggest thing that made me a power jumper from a speed jumper for a time was when I started jumping off my non-dominant leg. This leg was still at the same amount of strength as my dominant one it was just too awkward to go fast so I really developed into a power jumper from trying to jump off of that leg.

Better technique More stiffness Check out Frans Bosch on this topic. He claims that power jumpers are simply jumpers with bad technique ... controversial but worth a read

my track coach is trying to teach the jumping events from the standpoint of a power jumper while i'm more of a speed jumper naturally, what do you think i should do because i have never been the one to ignore a coach when they're trying to teach me on how they think i can get better?
@jumpguyty5 жыл бұрын
I think as an athlete your priority is to learn as much as you can. You can most definitely make mention of this in a way that isn't insulting to him/her as a coach and see what they do! Someone that is with you daily and has a firm understanding of the event would have a more accurate chance at determining the needs of your training.

How do you get a good vertical jump (ie a strong block foot, pushing you straight up) if we don't put our leg very far in front of us as a speed jumper. It seems like a speed jumper would struggle to get sufficient braking force.
@jumpguyty5 жыл бұрын
This would be accomplished by adjusting the distance and speed of your penultimate.

So I'm definitely a 100 power jumper but I need to work on speed cause I struggle to use more speed so would I be correct in saying that in the motion the only big difference between your approach in the jump itself is that you're applying a break on the last step? The action of the other leg should feel like you're just continuing the stride

I know how to do 1 foot jump and 2 foot jump ,what i do is i use 1 foot jump for long jumps like freethrow lay up and 2 foot jump for vertical jump for blocking and rebounding I can also do blocks and rebound in 1 foot jump so that kinda makes me a little bit confused on training what type of jump i should do
@lockinarchergaming43014 жыл бұрын
any chance you know how to reduce drag because i'm a power jumper and I drag my foot to the extent that i destroy my shoes once a month.
@jumpguyty4 жыл бұрын
Lockinarcher gaming you could try slowing or shortening your approach a little to see if that helps. Sometimes the toe drag happens to control your speed. That means you’ll have to really power through the last few strides!

Is there a range, like a power/speed continuum (“pure” power or speed on either end, with varying amounts of the characteristics of either extreme in between)? I ask because my brothers and I are all power jumpers. But if I’m carrying too much speed, I can’t jump as high. My brother, on the other hand, is practically sprinting on his approach.
@jumpguyty5 жыл бұрын
Big Will 1-foot is more so just stylistically understood, but yes there would be a range at which power jumpers can manage speed. This wouldn’t classify them as a speed jumper though as the classification is based more so off of ground contact management and position.

Hey so I noticed that I’m a power jumper off my left foot ( right foot drags up) but speed jumper off my right foot (left foot cycles up). Is this common? Also, would you say power jumping is better for basketball? It seems that most NBA players power jump, even when doing free throw line dunks.

Alright I'm definitely a power jumper. Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like these two things are important for improving a one foot power jump: 1) the speed and force coming from that sweeping leg 2) the plant legs ability to handle higher approach speed and turn it into the jump What are some effective ways to improve those?
@jumpguyty5 жыл бұрын
Great questions! Your'e quite right that the varying archetypes require a variance in physical requirement. As a power jumper, stability plays a crucial role through the plant and the block, so things like single leg hops (staple in PPA training - many vids on this) will be very beneficial. Partial range step-ups, plyometric variations and standard lifts such as squats and deadlifts will improve strength. Drive leg power requires effective hip flexor and quad strength, but most importantly synchronicity of drive leg, arm drive and extension moments through the ankle, knee and hip.

What I’ve found is that people who are speed jumpers are running correctly (they are using frontside mechanics) power jumpers aren’t running with good form which is why it swings low to the ground which creates a longer ground contact time whilst speed jumpers are quicker because they are running more effieciently there knee is already recovered all it has to do is come out as the heel recovers to the hamstring while the power jumper has to get his knee from the ground all the way up into the air
