adjective clauses | relative clauses | noun clauses | adverb clauses | independent clauses | subordinate clauses
Learn how and when to use different clauses in English. A "clause" is a group of words that have a subject and a verb. Sometimes these groups function as an adjective, sometimes they function as a noun, and sometimes they function as an adverb. Using clauses in your speaking and writing will take your English to the next level.
There are a total of FOUR TESTS in this lesson so you can track your progress.
Use these TIMESTAMPS to help you:
00:00 intro
00:39 ADJECTIVE CLAUSES
02:05 relative pronouns (who, which, that, whose)

I noticed that some examples in Adverb clause describe two actions in the past without using Past Perfect for the earlier action. Could you please make it clear?
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish 22 күн бұрын
That's a good observation. The past perfect isn't always necessary when the sequence of events is already clear. This can be if there are multiple past actions. For example: -I woke up, got dressed, ate breakfast, and left for work. Here the sequence is already clear. The sequence is in order. Words like "before" and "after" also make the sequence clear. The past perfect isn't always necessary, especially in a short sentence: -We bought groceries before the store closed. "had bought" isn't necessary. I hope this clarifies things!

HI Arnel I'm bit confused by Adverb & Noun Clauses. What's the difference? How can I distinguish it?
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish 21 күн бұрын
A noun clause can be replaced by a noun: I don't know why my cat never meows. I don't know the reason. You can see "the reason (noun)" replaces the noun clause "why my cat never meows". An adverb clause explains when, where, why, how. I waited until the rain stopped. My adverb clause "until the rain stopped" tells us when. It cannot be replaced by a noun. I hope this helps!

"I don't have my hearing aids in, SO whatever he said is fine" is a COMPOUND SENTENCE, isn't it? So there are 2 independen clauses connected by a coordinating conjunction (so). "Whatever he said" is a noun clause which has WH-EVER word + subject + verb. But that clause also woks as subject of the second independend clause. WHATEVER HE SAID (subject) is (verb) fine (subject complement). Is it everything rigth?
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish

Yes, you are correct. The noun clause is functioning as the subject of the second clause.
