"I have languished, not lived Through half of my earthly life, And now. Lord, You appear to me In the shape of an impossible dream. I see the light on Mount Tabor And I feel a great remorse That I have so loved the land and the sea. The whole deep sleep of existence; That my youthful powers Have not submitted to Yours, That the beauty of Your daughters So acutely torments my heart. But really, is love but a little red flower That has only a moment to live, But really, is love but a small flame That is easily extinguished? With this quiet, melancholy thought I will somehow drag out this life; But You look to the next one, I’ve ruined one as it is." ~ Nikolay Gumilev, 1921, before being shot by the Bolsheviks on charges of counterrevolutionary conspiracy. His poetry was not published in the USSR from 1925 to 1986.

They all sat encircled around the fire. The darkness and coldness crawling and moving around their campsite, where the struggling flames light didn't reach. Their empty eyes pinned to the fire. The dancing flames bringing alive memories of the past weeks. Sparks flying to the starry nightsky like the souls of their fallen brothers. There were no more words left to be spoken. They all felt the cold emptiness of this lost land which had been soaked in their and the enemies blood like their hands had been aswell. Rubbing them in the freezing snow didn't relieve the sticking tainted feeling on their hands and hearts. And didnt relieve the pain in their souls. Kept alive through silent companionship this rare moment of rest made them reflect on the twisted turns of fate which had brought them down to this hellish place. Hypnotized by fire. Some saw the flames that engulfed their agonized comrades. Some saw the muzzleflashs which took away their friends. Some saw the fading light in their enemies eyes. Twigs in the fire cracking and breaking in the silence as loud as gunshots and crushing bones. All these young men, once had been children. With hopes an dreams and idols to look up to. The idols betrayed their dreams and the betrayed dreams crushed their hopes. And the hopelessness of hearing the wounded cry for their mothers made it painfully clear that this war was nothing but a place to torment their souls. Far from home and heroism. Fingers shivering cold and frozen. Starved and sick. Millions of stars watching over them. Wasting away their life on this little insignificant planet, doing the unimaginable to their equals in order to survive and satisfy long lost ideals. The ones that escaped and survived this day would still carry the pain and hopelessness of these days within every stinging heartbeat. Spreading it onto the loved ones they meant to protect. Creating new men even more foreign to love, equally lacking the inner strength to withstand the destructive force of the same illusions that had sold their ancestors into the same trap of pointless slaughter. And most of them unable to accept the most painful thing: The ones whose lives they hurt and took with the desperate cruel forces of war probably could have been the ones to best understand the struggle for purpose these young men had been led to drown in. I normally don't write but I gave it a try today. English ain't my primary language.

The fires song and dance calmed me as I laid on the ground, looking up to the night sky, noticing the Orions Belt. The continous strumming of the guitar and occaisonal swig from the flask calmed the nerves, ending the violent shaking in my hands. Before I knew it, I had soon fallen asleep and drifted to a happier place...

I have never been in war but i have seen combat with my own eyes, bodies of young guys dead in the floor, gun shoots in walls, people running. This types of songs are sad and calming. Be strong comrades.

They’re bands I’ve hardly listened to in years but I would nominate «The Fireside» by Yo La Tengo and «Visiting Friends» by Animal Collective. Would definitely go for some country as well, maybe Harry McClintock’s «Big Rock Candy Mountain» blaring from a shitty transistor radio.
@triggeredhondaboy86482 жыл бұрын
Dude hearing big rock candy mountain around a fire is probably one of the earliest camping memories I have. A friend's dad brought his acoustic guitar on a camp probably like ten or so years ago and he was playing while we were all sitting around the fire. Anyway I remember the kids dad was always a super positive, look on the brightside kind of dude and the majority of the songs he played kind of fit that vibe. I remember when he played that song right around the chorus his voice got really into it. I was probably zoned out looking at the fire but I remember looking over at him while everyone was looking at the fire and his face got all glazed over and sad. I remember being really confused why he was so sad singing about candy. Funny enough I just looked up that song for the first time since then a few months and it's crazy how some context can change a memory. The guy that sings it on youtube does a pretty banging job but hearing it around a fire with some homies definitely hits different.

This was one of the best features in S.t.a.l.k.e.r.: after some adrenaline pumping firefights or running away from the horrors of the Zone to just sit at a campfire, eat some canned shit and chill out to the jokes and talks and acustic guitar music and singing.
