Because it was supposed to be creepy. Back then, in my opinion, the story felt way more interesting and during some parts of the main quests i remeber it being a bit spooky as i was so immersed into it, ( especially before and during the quests with those pandorian fractures from the ground that you had to vacuum iykyk) . But it was part of the vibe. Tha game was full of mystery and interesting plots.
