Welcome! This is an introduction on a series of videos to learn about the Liturgy of The Hours; what it is, why we pray with it, and how to pray with it.
Please pay attention to the playlists!
"Liturgy of the Hours" playlist covers the entire four book set. (11 videos)
"Christian Prayer - Single Book Liturgy of the Hours" covers the SINGLE book version (4 videos)
There is also a comparison of the two formats mentioned above and I close with a complete walkthrough for the "special" occasions of Solemnities, Feasts and Memorials.
"Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary" playlist gives you some info and a general walkthrough of this office (2 videos)

This is very good. I spent three years in Catholic Seminary and never fully understood the books this well. We did Morning and Evening prayer in the Chapel. Night Prayer was on our own. I still love them. Incredible way to pray. It is worth the effort to learn. Thank you. Bill

Thanks Bill! I hear it's the same way in the permanent diaconate as well.. It was described to me once as they had a bunch of breviaries on the table and everyone had to take one. Then the teacher opened the book and started praying and the students were all confused and flipping pages back and forth trying to figure it out!

Even though I prefer the Western Rite Orthodox Benedictine Matins and Monastic Diurnal, I do quite like the Liturgy of the Hours. I would definitely buy the Leather Bound edition if I were to pray these instead of the traditional Benedictine hours. Your videos are excellent, so you are an advanced layman. Matins is my favorite hour, so definitely I'd have to use the 4 volume set instead of the one volume Christian Prayer. I think many Catholic laymen will benefit for you videos on the LOTH.

I have been to so many videos to get a real sense of how to pray the Office and this is the best one I have found so far. It has made me very confident I can buy the entire Office and pray it without too much difficulty. I know it takes a lot of time to do well, but I am ready to "dive right in". Thank you so much for sharing these very important tips and tools.

I love how you structured this video, to include its history, and the unboxing element is cool to. Thank you so much - this is just what I've been looking for! For some time I have felt that God was inviting me to a deeper prayer life, and I wasn't sure how to go about that. When I found out what praying the liturgy of the hours was, it was like the answer to a prayer. I now have my first book - Volume II (Lent & Easter) - and plan to being on Ash Wednesday next week, This group of videos is just what I need. Grace a Dieu!

Christopher McNicholas Question: I am working on Office if Readings. Page 615; Verses. They are said “before the readings to mark the transition from...” What on the page is my verse? For example, see today-page 68/69? What is the Verse? (I wish it was labeled in red) I hope this isn’t a stupid question. As beautiful as this prayer form is, I feel as though I am learning a different language right now. 🙃

@@evelynellison8515 The verse you are looking for today is on page 859 in the psalter immediately after the last antiphon in the psalms.. I agree, it's not clearly marked but it's the line "I put my trust in the word of the Lord. -- All my hope is in him." It appears directly above the instructions to reference the readings on pg 68/69.

Chris, just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your Liturgy of the Hours teaching videos. I have been wanting to pray the Hours for 40 years and just got turned off by the complexity and obviously my personal lack of discipline. Your teaching style and depth of coverage was what I needed to be successful. So happy I found you. You will probably see me going back to your videos over and over....but I am learning. Got the Invitatory and Morning Prayer down pretty well and now moving to the evening prayer. I'd like to do all the Hours but my goal right now is to be consistent in these 3 areas. God's blessing to you and your family and again thanks for helping me!

Thanks for the kind words! I did it out of my own frustration and the hope that I could help others. I always makes me feel blessed to know I've helped others.... and yes, Easter is the toughest season to keep track of! I'm happy to hear you are taking it slowly and working up instead of rushing in and getting frustrated enough to quit. Stick with it!! It's well worth the internal peace and comfort you will start to experience. Not sure if I mentioned it in the videos (it's been awhile!), but the St. Joseph's Guide might be worth picking up to double check yourself.. They make them for the 4 volume and 1 volume sets: www.catholiccompany.com/st-joseph-guide-liturgy-hours-twenty-twenty-i32164/ And if you're just looking for a quick and simple page number guide, a free page guide for just Morning and Evening can be had here: www.liturgyofthehours.org/todays-pages

I came to knowing of the Divine Office late in life. As an aspiring deacon we were required to learn the practice. As time went by, I came to wonder, "why did I not know about this sooner?" St. Ambrose (lived in the 4th Century and one of the first doctors of the Church wrote this about the book of Psalms: "History instructs us, the law teaches us, prophecy foretells, correction punishes, morality persuades; but the book of psalms goes further than all these. It is medicine for our spiritual health. Whoever reads it will find in it a medicine to cure the wounds caused by his own particular passions. Whoever studies it deeply will find it a kind of gymnasium open for all souls to use, where the different psalms are like different exercises set out before him. In that gymnasium, in that stadium of virtue, he can choose the exercises that will train him best to win the victor’s crown." I have come to understand the practice of the Divine Office is like working out in this gymnasium of which St. Ambrose spoke. It is not just the psalms - but the psalms comprise the majority of it. I appreciate that you promote this "workout".

Thank you a hundred times for this video series. I have to learn to pray this as part of my activities with a third order, and your videos were recommended to me as the best how-to instruction. We are expected to use books at the meetings, why I don't know because it seems like most of the members are using the apps for their daily prayers outside the meetings, and many of the resources telling us how to pray this are way too much into theology and not enough into practical advice. I don't need to be told how to think about Jesus when I read a psalm, I need to be told how to flip around in the book 10 times without going insane.

Many thanks, Christopher! It is great to see how universal the Catholic Church and it's liturgy of the hours is. I am German and I looked for a good introduction to the liturgy of the hours in German. But I found nothing satisfactory.... until I stumbled upon your series on KZbin. It is extremely helpful to me, even though I pray the LOH in German with German breviaries. But only the language is different, all the rest - structure, sequence, calendar etc. - is the same using my German language breviary. So, I just follow your instructions... Thanks again for your helpful and thorough introduction. It makes things much easier for me, here in Heidelberg, Germany! 🙂🤝🙏

Since you are just starting out, pick up a copy of the St. Joseph Guide to help you out until you get more comfortable. If you buy the 4 volume as a complete set, they usually include a free guide. If not, guides can be purchased annually for like $2.50 USD. I think Amazon sellers also have them. The direct link to the publisher: catholicbookpublishing.com/product/1589

I found the Liturgy of The Hour mentioned in the Novena of Blessed Imelda prayer (patron saint of First Communion). At the young age of nine years old she was doing the Devine Hour (Liturgy of the Hour) in a covent with nuns whom her parents had allowed the child to be educated and trained by them because the child loved God so much. I found the application on the cell phone called, "Laudate". It is simply organized there. However I am going to start to safe money to invest in the hardback books to own and use. I want them in my home because the internet may become unavailable for weather or cell towers not operating. Not to mention I want to learn the true way of studying, worship, singing, and praying throughout the day with the schedule to help me discipline my soul, mind, heart, etc. for God is so good that I need to commit myself to him. So far I have been using the application coming up on two weeks. The schedule that you share with us that you use I am doing to. I so much from you further and for that I thank you. May God bless you for teaching myself and you viewers, I too a layperson.

I'm glad it's helped you out! Learn those few pages of the Ordinary and you got the bones of the whole thing ready to be fleshed out! In the videos, I downplayed the "St. Joseph Guide For The Liturgy of The Hours" (or the Christian Prayer version), but I've reversed that thought as I've become more comfortable working with the Liturgy. I don't use the guide much for actual page numbers, but it's been invaluable on finding memorials that are not in the book nor the red 1992 addendum. Today, November 25th is a good example... neither the book nor the addendum have it listed, but the Guide told me that today is the memorial (optional) of St. Catherine of Alexandria, virgin and martyr.

Once I get past the OoR Psalms and Psalm prayer it says use Readings sprayer from Office of the Day. The morning and evening each have a reading but no patristic or hagiographic reading? Can you cover this…. Do I just use Biblical and non-biblical texts in back of volume? Thanks, Pax.
@cmcnicholas
@cmcnicholas 7 ай бұрын
Yes, you would use the texts in the back. There is an interesting read in the link below which includes this nugget: "This option is the result of another compromise. The experts reforming the Divine Office did not want the Office of Readings to be overly long, so that it would not be a burden to priests charged with pastoral ministry. Some of the experts, however, felt that some, such as contemplative religious and retired priests, might appreciate the ability to observe these more important days in an expanded way. The solution agreed upon was to relegate the material to an appendix of the book and leave it as an option." adoremus.org/2022/03/the-general-instruction-of-the-liturgy-of-the-hours-speaks-of-a-supplement-optional-lectionary-and-special-appendix-where-are-these-to-be-found/

It's really a personal choice as well as a budgetary one. I prefer leather as it historically lasts longer (and I am hoping to not have to replace any volumes due to wear and tear) but it does cost more. Since I only use one book at a time, I bought a single large leather zip case that can fit my small bible and any one of the LOTH volumes... Again, that's a personal choice.

@@cmcnicholas Thank you for replying , but tell me , I wouldn't think there would be any fundamental difference between the American edition and the one used for Australia, the Liturgy would be the same for both countries, shorely as too the Saint's Days if not , how so? I own the English edition of three volumes and I'm far from happy with it . I find it cramp and the volumes are to bulky. Your edition with its four volumes seems to be layed out and styled more agreeable plus the font is larger. What are your thoughts can the American edition be adapted to work in Australia. I hope you don't mind me asking you as you appear quite knowledgeable upon the subject.

@@anthonysummerfield3702 From what I can tell, you are free to use whatever version you want to, UNLESS you are bound by vows as clergy or religious order. In that case, you would be required to use the officially authorized texts.

My work is free for everyone, so I wouldn't think about selling anything. It all takes about 8GB... I can throw it on a USB drive for you and mail it if that works... just give me a mailing address via private email and I'll send you one!

Kýrie, eléison (Greek: Κύριε, ἐλέησον) means “Lord, have mercy.” Besides being a statement, the “Kýrie” also is the first sung prayer of the Tridentine Mass.

You'd be surprised... now that I have more experience with it, each of the 3 day time prayers takes no more than 10 minutes each... equivalence of a smoke break in some parts of the world. It's not about how long it takes, it's about making God the focus of your day and remembering Him throughout it!

Has it made a change in your life and surely you would use your mobile phone when at work instead of a obvious book?

@@The12thSeahorse It *has* made a difference. I am more at peace with myself, and knowing that I have a prayer interval in front of me (or just past), I am more apt to slow down and reign in my temper with others.... it's too embarrassing to me to curse out another person or wish harm on them and then follow that up by praying to the Lord as though I didn't just fail to love my neighbor. And I do prefer the book. I prefer the tactile feel of it, and when I put it on my desk or carry it somewhere with me, it's a reminder. There is too much distraction for me with the phone. Nothing worse than reading a psalm when a text or email pops up on the screen to ruin my flow. I also believe that some of the apps use different translations than what we use in the U.S., so I prefer to stick with a rarely changing set of print authorized for use in the U.S. dioceses and confirmed by the Apostolic See.
