Iron Deficiency Anemia
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common hematological disorder characterized by decreased levels of circulating iron, resulting in insufficient production of hemoglobin and red blood cells. This condition is frequently encountered worldwide, affecting individuals of all ages, with particular prevalence in women of childbearing age and children. 💉 Iron plays a crucial role in the synthesis of hemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport in red blood cells. In IDA, inadequate iron intake, malabsorption, chronic blood loss (e.g., menstrual bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding), or increased demand (e.g., pregnancy) leads to diminished iron stores, impairing erythropoiesis. As a result, patients may present with fatigue, weakness, pallor, and exertional dyspnea. Laboratory findings typically reveal microcytic hypochromic red blood cells, decreased serum ferritin levels, and low serum iron. 💊 Treatment strategies involve addressing the underlying cause of iron deficiency, such as dietary modification, iron supplementation, or management of underlying conditions causing blood loss. Monitoring of iron status and response to therapy is essential to ensure adequate correction of anemia.
