Montana was one if the the most efficient quarterbacks ever. I don't care if he never passed for a billion yards or anything, he was the best playoff quarterback ever. Also, have you seen the accuracy if his throws? they were on-spot. Finally, he had the best name of any quarterback. So, yeah, he was the best

If you wanted a dollar for every yard and touchdown thrown you'd want Brady, Brees, or Manning. But if you wanted the best chance to win, you're gonna want Montana. In a Big game, Montana was going to stay on the Bus just a little bit longer than those other guys.

I'm 41 yrs old. Seen alot of great Niner teams. But I have NEVER felt so at ease even if we were sown 14 in the 4th qtr. Some how some way he would make it happen. He never looked nervous he was silly smooth. Best post season qb ever . Who else u want under center when you gotta go 90+ doe the Super Bowl ? If you need 3 call Brady. If you need 6 call Joe. 88,89 playoffs 19tds 1int 70% 1,623 yards Dominated. He was usually on the bench in 4th qtr. Losing qbs put up lots of #'s . Joe was efficient when the NFL was for men . They forgot to mention that he also played in an era where defenses weren't handicapped by the rules. WRs and QBs didn't have refs protecting them like now. He also played in an era that will probably go down as the greatest era for defensive players. No QBs of this era had to deal with the likes of Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks, Wilbur Marshall, Mike Singletary, Otis Wilson, Reggie White, Sam Mills, Vaughn Johnson, Pat Swillings, Leonard Marshall, Dexter Manley. This man has to deal with three of the greatest defenses... Bears, Giants and Saints. A few of them he got knocked out of the game.

All you Patriot fans who come on here and complain that Brady is the greatest have one serious problem... you're all too young and didn't see *Montana* play. NOBODY ever played the QB position like he did. He also played in a different era... an era where QB's could get hit and did... today they would throw a flag. Nobody was better under pressure than *Montana* and I've seen some of the best clutch QB's ever... *Snake Stabler*, *Marino*, *Elway*, *Staubach*... but *Montana* just made everything look easy. He made it all look so easy... playing the most difficult position in all of sports and he made it look easy. Can't say enough about *Joe Montana*!!!
@peterkay8997
@peterkay8997 7 жыл бұрын
I saw Montana play and he is one of the best. That doesn't diminish Brady's accomplishments. If you watched last year's AFCC the Broncos hit the Patriots QB 23 times. Not too shabby.
@DrDeath26
@DrDeath26 7 жыл бұрын
There's a massive difference between being hit today and being hit in the 80's or 90's. As far as Brady's accomplishments... he's lost two Super Bowls to a _supposedly_ weaker team. I'll never forget before the first SB against the Giants and a reporter asked Brady what he would do if the Giant D held the Pats offense to 14 points. Brady just laughed that arrogant, cocky way of his and said... "That will never happen." Well, guess what Tom... it did happen. 14 points is all you managed to put on the board. Another difference is that in Brady's Super Bowl wins, he always relied on his kicker to make the FG to win it, whereas *Montana* drove his team 92 yards and THREW the game winning TD with :34 left. So you can say all you want about Brady and his accomplishments, but he still isn't as good as *Joe Montana* and he never will be.
@peterkay8997
@peterkay8997 7 жыл бұрын
Dr Death I respect your strong feelings on the subject but you seem to have a fixed mindset when it comes to the comparison. Obviously the defense isn't allowed to hit QBs like they used to but your characterization that it is a "massive difference" is an exaggeration. Players today are bigger and faster. Defensive linemen who were considered big then are outweighed by today's players by 10-30 pounds. LT was only 235 lbs. Al Baker was 260. JJ Watt, Julius Peppers, Ndamukong Suh and others are 290+ and can fly. Not to mention the fact that Brady has been sacked 120 times more than Montana has. If you put something in quotes, you should be sure that it is a direct quote. Brady never said what you said he said. At least make an attempt to be accurate. Montana & his league-best #1 offense w/ Rice, Wilson, Clark, Francis, Rathman, Craig & Co. (13-2 regular season) got shut down and lost to the 8-7 Vikings AT HOME with Joe throwing a pick-six before BEING BENCHED. Montana & Co scoring only 3 points in back-to-back one-and-dones. Brady has more wins, more comebacks, more game-winning drives, and a higher playoff winning percentage. So for you to dismiss the comparison only belies your bias. Plus you're completely ignoring the fact that the Niners had a Top 3 defense for 9/10 of Joe's seasons there. In his last 3 NFCC games S.F. gave up a total of 6 points. He only needed a FG to win. Talk about playing without pressure.
@DrDeath26
@DrDeath26 7 жыл бұрын
First of all, Brady did say what I said he said. Secondly, I live in KC and got to experience *Montana Magic* up close and personal. I saw every game he played with the Chiefs, at Arrowhead and on the television when they were on the road. What that guy meant to his team is unparalleled. He lifted that entire team up and his first season here, pulled off two 4th quarter comebacks in the playoffs. And he did it by throwing TD's, not relying on a kicker. Secondly, Brady has been sacked more because he's thrown like 3000 more times than *Montana* did. So 120 more sacks is minor compared to the number of attempts. But that's okay. You can believe what you want, just know that you're wrong. There will never be another QB like *Montana*, period.
@peterkay8997
@peterkay8997 7 жыл бұрын
Dr Death Not sure why you are taking this so personally. I don't have anything bad to say about your hero. Just spitting out facts. Montana went to a Chief team that was coming off three straight playoff seasons so while he played well there he didn't really do anything for K.C. that Steve DeBerg and Dave Krieg didn't do. But I'm not going to pee on your parade. It's your past and your journey.

As a teen in the 70's, I was Dallas Cowboy & Roger Staubach fan, and to be truthful, I hated Joe Montana during the 80's, because of "the catch" against the Cowboy's in 1982. After that, one of my favorite things to do was to root against Joe Montana & the 49er's during the 80's (bad decision). But in hind sight I must admit, he is the greatest ever in the POST season (especially in Superbowls), when it really counted, and during a time when a quarterback had to throw under-pressure knowing he might get HIT savagely. In fact, that is what ended his career with the 49er's (he was never the same) and was traded to the Chiefs. I seen both Brady & Joe play. Brady is very good, but in the clutch Joe was better. If you look at Joe, most of his heroic throws are on the move and avoiding this type of pressure. He was the best at throwing on the run, and I think this separated him from the rest. Besides as Brady even admits, Joe Montana was his childhood hero and inspiration.

I would say that when this was posted Brady and Montana may have been tied. But there's no competition now. Brady won another MVP, went to two more SBs and won one of them since then. And threw for 505 yards in the one he lost. 5-3 > 4-0 in Super Bowls, there's really no question about it. And if you want to go by stats Brady wins in every meaningful category.
@CrystalDominique
@CrystalDominique 5 жыл бұрын
If Tom Brady was the QB you claim he is Philadelphia would have lost Super Bowl LII & NYG would have 2 Super Bowl wins. If you study Super Bowl LII Brady had time to throw the 🏈 away before that strip sack by Brandon Graham. When you see your offensive line collapsing you throw the 🏈 away so your offense can maintain possession. During San Francisco's game-winning drive in Super Bowl XXIII Montana had to throw the ball out of bounds on either 2nd or 3rd Down when he saw he didn't have the time to get set. That's all Tom Brady had to do in Super Bowl LII before the strip by Brandon Graham. New England would still have 3rd and if necessary 4th Down to pick up the 1st to keep the drive alive. If New England would have had possession past the 2:00 warning in Super Bowl LII they would have won. Tom Brady jeopardized New England's entire season by refusing to get rid of the 🏈 on 2nd Down & 2 and that's why Philadelphia won. As a QB you just don't do that when everything your entire team has worked for just to be in the Super Bowl is on the line.

Brady throws great underneath ; that's it. His championships are due to a salary cap, that does not allow teams to stack talent on defense. Montana faced defenses like the Giants, Bears, Broncos, Redskins, and raiders when they mattered. There is no pass rush anymore. Is there a Lawrence Taylor out there? Charles Haley? Fred Dean? Just a few good linemen that fill the gap. . . . BORING.

Man, looking at this comments section you'd think that football didn't exist before 2001. Tom Brady was not a great QB until the 2004 season (i.e. after he had already won 2 Super Bowls) and he has had the benefit of the rules opening up the passing game so QBs can achieve numbers never seen before. There is an argument to be made that Brady is the best ever (just as there is for Manning, Montana, Unitas, etc.) but comparing Super Bowl wins or stats means very little if you don't apply some context (ex. the rules at the time, the teams the QBs played for, what the stats of an average QB looked like, etc.).

How is Montana perfect? He was a Quarterback in the NFL for 16 years and he was only able to get to 4 Superbowls, that means he was only good enough to get there 25% of his career, he failed to make the appearance 12 times. Tom Brady on the other hand, has played for 20 years now and made it to the big game 9 times, that's a smoking 45% of his career and won 30% of his career.

The thing is that what truly makes Montana the GOAT and not Brady is based on pure legacy. Montana and Walsh had a much bigger impact on the league than Brady and Belichick. Walsh and Montana laid the groundwork for the offensive doctrine that teams to this day try to emulate and use as a basis to win superbowls 30 years later in the West Coast Offense. If it wasn't for Montana and Walsh, almost non of what Brady and Belichick have accomplished would have been possible. Montana basically created the modern NFL and he did it in an era that was MUCH more brutal. Sure Brady has put up better numbers but he's played in a different league that allows such inflated numbers for quarterbacks, and Montana and Walsh helped make it possible. Until Brady almost completely changes how the game is played I will not consider him the greatest of all time.

In fact, I'd argue that if Montana would've had the benefit of modern medicine and the "Brady rules", he would have led the Chiefs to a ring after the Niners traded him. But Brady is GREAT. The guy went from one of the best "game managers" of all time and letting Vinatieri kick them to wins - to being a badass gunslinger and setting single season records for QBs in yardage and TD passes.

If Joe Montana played in Tom Brady’s era there’s a good chance the 49ers would have never lost Joe Montana in the first place to injuries. When Joe Montana got injured in the 1990 NFC championship game to the New York Giants in today’s standards that would’ve been considered a dirty hit it would have been illegal. Which means Joe Montana probably would have won more Super Bowls. And Steve Young would’ve probably been traded to another football team.

I am educated and know the game of football very well and I don't mean in just the last 20 years either.Anyone that just looks at some stats and throws numbers at you without taking a deeper look at how those numbers came to be is the dumb one.Open your eyes and take a look around sometime OK ?

Overall career Brady is better. But If I'm picking one QB to play in the Super Bowl Montana is still my guy. His Super performances were flawless....Brady cannot claim that.

This comments section is filled with people who keep saying Brady was better but let me ask you this: Who handles Pressure Better: Brady or Montana? Brady can easily be beat based on if you can place great middle pressure on his own line like the Texans did. The team that was the best at this the 46 Bears, (1981-1986.) And Montana beat them 23-0 in the 1984 season. If Brady crumpled under the Texans offense think of the mass acted it would be to see him get sacked by Hampton, Singletary, McMichael, or to have Fridge just sit on him. Better question who faced the better competition: Montana or Brady? Montana faced hall of fame Quarterbacks: John Elway, Dan Marino, Dan Fouts, Jim Kelly etc. Brady has who other than Peyton Manning? Drew Brees could match up against Dan Fouts, Peyton Manning when he arrived with the Colts who was compared with: Dan Marino. Montana was more athletic, had more options, handled pressure better, faced and blew out better competition, and he was more accurate. 4-0 in Superbowls, against Legendary Quarterbacks; John Elway, Dan Marino, heck even Boomer Esiason was better than anyone Brady faced. Sure Montana had a stacked team but Brady for the past 5-10 Years too. He had Randy Moss as a receiver for 2 years, in 2013 he received possible the best tight end ever in Rob Gronkowski, He worked with a great wide receiver in Julian Edelman and since the arrival of Bill Belicheck they had one of the best defenses in the league since 2000. Joe Montana just based on his in game performances beats out Brady

Marvin Listenbee thank you but look at what happened in the first half, their offense broke down completely and the only thing Brady did good was the comeback in the 4th quarter to win overtime. Brady honestly had a pretty bad performance, he threw a pick 6, missed the majority of the throws throughout the original game. Edelman was dropping passes frequently, Chris Hogan looked like the rookie he is, and Steven Gostowski (correct me if I spelled it wrong on accident) missed a 40 yard field goal. Overall it seem to me, the Falcons choked rather than the Patriots excelled.

Also I forgot to add Montana was dominant from 81' onward heck he led the Kansas City Chiefs to a championship game. Brady always played on the same team, the same coach the same System. Montana proved at 34 years old that his presence alone upped the team's ability. When Brady goes to a championship game with the Jets, Chiefs or Browns then you can say that he isn't a system QB. Also Montana didn't have Walsh his entire career, from 1889-1994. Montana didn't have Walsh but still one a Superbowl and went to the Conference championship for the NFC and AFC Titles. Also If Montana doesn't take that hit in the 1990 NFC Championship game which lead to a concussion, broken hand and broken ribs, then he leads the 49ers to 3 super bowls in a row, and probably a 5th ring. Also the 4-3 playoff record argument is bs. Montana lost in the 1993 AFC Championship game against one of the best teams of the 90s. Kelly's Bills. He got to that game with one of the worst supporting casts for a Quarterback. Even then his playoff wins and losses are larger as you have to count Conference and Championship games which places it out at 16-9 playoff record not even counting Superbowls or his time in Kansas city. Which of they were counted would make his record: 20-9 One of the most impressive Playoff records for a Quarterback. Joe Montana was dominant. and was the centerpiece of both teams he played for. Montana is just plain the best

Link to where he says that or you're a lier. Montana has always been quoted that there's no greatest of all time and Otto Gram still has 7 Championships. Brady isn't even the most clutch or best of his era. That would be the Manning Bros. End of story cheatriot.
