1 killed, 5 injured in Iowa school shooting

A 6th grader was killed and five other people were injured in a shooting at Perry High School in Perry, Iowa. The shooter, a student at the high school, is dead. Ed O'Keefe reports.

Why aren't police officer's staying at the schools during school hours? I graduated back in 2002 and we had police officer's at my school at all times. I still don't understand why they don't do these things in school systems. Not to mention when I was in school we had metel detectors we had to go through everyday. We also were required to have clear or see through back packs as part as our dress code. We were required to have badges on at all times to swipe into our class rooms as well as entering my school. After Colembine my school took serious protocols to prevent any type of school shooting. As much as most townships pay in school taxes a year this desperately should be something they seriously need to be doing. It baffles me and it's heartbreaking yet if the right measures and protocols were in place these easily could be prevented. If the school boards did/do something like my high school did it would make a big difference.

We've been taking the same test over and over and we failed every time. We haven't learned how to pass the test using the same answer every time. Start arming any staff member who is willing to step up in the time of crisis, the shooting doesn't end until they are confronted by someone else with a gun. It took 7 minutes for police to arrive, that's an eternity when you have an active shooter.

We have a morality problem in this country, not a gun problem, because even if you eliminate all the guns, you will still be left with the violence. We are seeing this in places that have already banned guns, and it is not working. Of course, the gun violence is down, but other types of violence have gone up, and in some instances, way up. The UK is now going after knives, and Australia is now dealing with an epidemic of vehicular assaults; so much so that they are calling regulars cars and vehicles "assault vehicles." A news station in Great Britain, literally called lawn mowers,"fully automatic knives". I mean, it will never be enough for these people. They will always want more control. That is what this is all about, because of they actually dealt with the violence, lots of people could have any type of gun they want and it wouldn't be a problem, nobody would die! It is not the guns! It is the violence that lives in their hearts. And until we do something about that, innocent victims are still going to die, gun or no gun! End rant.
