For me they almost seem like a tablet replacement. Primarily for use at home, allowing you a bigger display than your phone to watch Netflix or KZbin, but also letting you stay hands free. Plus great for lying down so you don't have to tire your arms out holding the tablet above your head. Also a bit better for your neck as unlike a phone you won't always be tilting your head down, you can watch stuff at a comfortable normal angle.

here is some information for those interested in purchasing: - purchase on EE is only possible in the UK and you need to have a subscription with them (or physically go to the store); but on ebay there is a Japanese seller who usually ships them. - even if they have MR compatibility they are purely useful for aircasting, but you don't need a compatible phone for this: any device that supports USB-C to DP will work (for example also a steam deck or a desktop / laptop ). so they are called AR glasses but in the end they remain an excellent portable monitor in reality.

Today I had the idea that if mixing AR technology to voice recognition technology, we could generate subtitles to whatever people in front of you are saying which could be huge for language learners, but not only that, it could probably even auto-translate any language! A bit like the Google Translate conversation mode works right now but you would see the subtitles in the screen as you talk to people! For this reason alone, it would justify getting one of those.

That's already available for the Nreal Air, look up 'xrai glass' which is a simple translator on the screen (up to 9 languages at this point). I've tried the software on my android phone w/o the glasses (still debating to buy them as what/why will I REALLY use them for!). I'm basically deaf, so having live captioning apps on the phone is handy, the idea of having it displayed in front of you is even better. The software is free with add-on (expensive) monthy plans. I don't expect to need the plans and will stick with the freebie. Not sure if the XRAI GLASS app is available on IOS.

I think the Apple AR glasses would look similar to this and probably be wireless (all the major compute might be offloaded to your phone instead of the glasses). So the current use cases of AR/VR I’ve noticed are as follows: 1) Could be a cheaper option for professionals that use multiple monitors since you can use it as a hovering external display. Might even replace desktop monitors entirely if the resolution and color quality becomes better. 2) 3D artists already use VR devices for modeling, some say its more intuitive 3) Could serve as an iPad /TV replacement device. If multiple devices can sync in a way that people can consume the same video content with different devices that would be dope 4) Industrial applications (military, engineering, teaching, etc)

...why can't Facebook make the Quest 2 this seamless? This is exactly what I want VR for - playing games on a large screen without taking up a huge amount of space in my smaller apartment.
@TrexelCat
@TrexelCat Жыл бұрын
I recommend getting VorpX and/or Bigscreen. I have used(and still do) both. I also own a Quest 2. Bigscreen allows you to show your desktop on a massive big screen virtual television in your VR. And you don't need to move around, I play games on that perfectly fine from my desk and I live in an RV(so, far less space than your apartment). One advantage to Bigscreen is, if you have friends who have VR as well, you can invite them to your 'room' and share your screen with them. Watch movies together from your computer, or play split screen capable games like you are in the same room. VorpX allows you to play most of your standard games in a VR environment. With some having settings where you can actually play them in VR(full head tracking and such). Advantage here is, some games will actually take on a true 3d effect and make things really pop. You can also play them on a virtual screen if you don't want to go full VR. You will still get the stereoscopic 3d effect with games that support it. Drawback being, you can't share with friends. It's just a solo to you experience. Bigscreen is free. VorpX costs $39.99usd(at the time of this posting)

@@TrexelCat I love bigscreen for movies and shows, but with games the input lag is a bit too much for me. Granted I've only tried it with COD. I should try playing an offline single player game and see if it works better. I've never heard of VorpX. I should check it out. I tend to use big screen as a solo experience anyway. XD
@TrexelCat
@TrexelCat Жыл бұрын
@@ninjacats200 Yeah, slower paced solo games work better in Bigscreen. Also best if you use a link cable over wireless as the data transfer speed is faster and reduces some of that input lag. VorpX is a much better visual experience from the game side. Sadly, not all games will work with VorpX as it requires a very specific hooking method that will, at best not work with some games, and at worse cause the game to flat out crash hard. Up side though, VorpX allows you to use the VR controllers directly, even if the game doesn't support a controller by basically doing the same thing as other programs like JoytoKey do and remapping your controller inputs to keyboard/mouse commands. That remapping is customizable. I actually did a stream once where I played a game through VorpX. With a picture-in-picture window showing what I was seeing on my headset.

You can FaceTime with a digital version of you’re friend where it will feel like they’re in front of you and just put their face on a very accurate looking body. Can you imagine being able to set up your own virtual space in your home? In place of a real TV is a tv that will stay in the same place until you look in that direction. Same with a phone. Walk over to a wall with a camera and have a proper face time area. Remote controls all in AR for everything. Decorate your entire house in VR before you do it in real life. Set up settings for lights and decorations people can also see in AR when they drive by. So many possibilities.

I think that will happen when they get hand-tracking/gestures right. Maybe hands free done by cameras, and maybe it will be with a tiny intuitive control, or band that can read our muscle signals (already exists). But when that is done, and maybe some eyetracking in there too. Then I think people will switch really fast. Hell, they can even make some mind commands nowadays with tools like emotiv epoc. The future will be crazy

Also when come to typing experience, smart phone still provide the best user experience and efficiency. @@chengyangooi4694 yeah they are definitely issues to overcome that I’m not gonna say I have the answer to, so it’s interesting to hear your take. Do you not feel that many of those issues are largely down to the tech still being in its early stages? That as it matures, and as society changes to accommodate AR glasses, those problems may fade away and glasses will outcompete the pretty static and rigid experience that a smartphone offers in comparison? I don’t know, but I know it is very hard to predict where we will be 10 years from now.

From what I understand, you could open the full Google Maps app and maybe push it off to the side? But that seems like far too distracting and too much information. Ideally, they would have a custom app in the MR space that just showed basic info like next turn and time to destination. If they had exterior cameras, they could lay the next turn markings over the actual road - that's one of the holy grails of AR!
