Asked my then girlfriend to marry me on that ship. Stayed overnight in a state room and dined in the restaurant. Absolute service, beautiful restored 1950's/60's furniture, it's a beauty. Renovation costs were 175 million euros and nearly bankrupted the housingcorporation that owned it. The location where the ship is moored has a history too: Katendrecht(a peninsula in Rotterdam) was the place to go as a sailor all the way throughout the 60's and 70's if you wanted some "female companionship"... it was dilapidated throughout the 80's and 90's but since it's renovation with luxurious housing a very exclusive and popular neighbourhood to live.

I cruised on her when she was in Premier Hell. 24 years ago today. I took that trip just to see the ship. It’s still in my view the best ship Holland America had. The fabulous stairs to separate classes were brilliant.

I’ve been going on cruises since I was a child. My grandparents used to take us and I’m talking in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The cabin and the bathroom in this video are exactly how I remember cabins back on cruise ships built in the era of the Rotterdam. This video brought back so many memories, I just remember huge bathrooms on cruise ships. Today when I go on cruises, I laugh at how small the cabins and the bathrooms are. And the enclosed promenade, wow, I remember those as well.

This is a classic liner. I missed out on her but worked on the new Rotterdam in 1999. It was a beautiful ship and now under the Fred Olsen group.

What a fabulous experience Jamie! My first experience was SS Uganda in 1971- extremely basic!! This ship looked so lovely. Love the size of the cabin and ship facilities. Noted!!!! No shower curtain……… great review :)

The bit I loved were the wooden floors, the newer ships are a bit rubbish where the flooring is concerned, we were on Arvia last May and there was quite a bit of damage on the floors already...

This is funny, I often holidayed on the Scilly Isles and we used to go out to see the Rotterdam go past, on little fishing boats, to see the posh people on board, this would have been in the 1960’s. I have pictures of her with me waving at the passengers, she seemed enormous to see.

WestCord is the hotel company name of which this hotel is part of as is 'Hotel New York' The refurbishment to hotel has been plagued with problems:this commercial project was at some point brought in under a social housing cooperation. Through mismanagement and fraught it has had consequensesfor all housing cooperations Who would have thought? WestCord bought it somewhere in the 2010s and they have been doing justice to it.

Another awesome video Jamie! We are very jealous and definitely want to book a stay on Rotterdam one day! Love the classic decor and style, and she's docked in a great location too 😍 Pretty cool that there's an iron and ironing board in the cabin 😊 No queuing for hours in the ship's laundrette! On the plus side it saves hours of the holiday, but where are we going to get all the ship gossip from?!
