to me, this is the best animated movie ever. better than ghost in a shell, akira, vampire hunter x, all of them. my reason? the story was simple, clean and honorable. just a ninja (for hire) that did the right thing, regardless of what may or may not happen to him. the monsters were awesome. the animation was top notch. now, have there been better "visual" animation (cleaner graphics, smoother scene transitions)? maybe. afro samurai is a great example. that was a clean looking movie. its a close second. i found out about this movie back in the mid 90's from a friend. i then bought the dvd. now i have a digital copy to have forever. thanks for the reminder of this. i will have to go watch it again!

1 error the ninja girl tried to stab the samurai, her blade got caught in the bamboo...being blind he only heard her coming..as he sliced down, the blade blocked it . Jubei stabs him with a forward thrust. In a unbelievably last breath he says....impossible..

Reminds me of my first animes... dipping my toes into animation with an actual mature theme to it (and some not, but they took themselves seriously, at the least). _Crying Freeman, Roujin Z, Dirty Pair, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Martian Successor: Nadesico, Vandread, Appleseed, Vampire Hunter D, Robot Hunter Casshern, MD Gheist..._ I wish I could remember all the others. Edit: Oh yeah, how could I forget _Demon City: Shinjuku?_ It was one of the first five I ever watched. Shame on me.

One of the first Animes i ever saw, together with Orotsukidoji. Can't remember which was first. Still Ninja Scroll is far ahead of his time in terms of animation and storytelling. This anime got me hooked up. And now even Mortal Kombat took the death scene of Tessai and turned it into a fatality. THAT ist how AWESOME this anime ist.

Conservation of Ninjutsu. One ninja is an unstoppable killing machine. A duo or small team of ninjas are fallible but ultimately superior given the right teamwork. As the numbers increase, the quality spreads further and further into quantity until eventually you have an army of ninjas that are nothing but cannon fodder.

Jubei didn't predict that the bamboo blade was going to save him or crafted such trap. He even acts relieved when able to defeat the deaf guy since in the sequence it is clearly shown that his sword hits Kagero's blade first and then Jubei lands his strike. It goes with the theme of the movie also. He jumps in many fights without having the upper hand and ends up winning either by grit, luck or the help of others. It makes him more likeable and brave. Also, it's the second time that Kagero saves his life. EDIT: People think also that Jubei "positioned himself" to be protected by Kagero's blade, but that is also not true. Utsutsu both throws him in that direction and was going to be able to land his strike first. Jubei just has time to try and stab him and it's only because of the blade that he is able to do it.

10:55 Jubei didn't use a trick or strategy in this fight. Kagero actually jammed her sword into the bamboo while trying to strike the Blind man. This inadvertently acted as a shield for Jubei when he and the blind man went for a final strike at each other. If Kagero doesn't enact this action, Jubei might have been killed
