Dropped Frames did a long interview with Brian Fargo a few months ago for Wasteland. Great insight on the development process, bug fixes, and Microsoft's (and Phil Spencer's personal) contributions in making that game better. I think they interviewed Phil Spencer a month or two after that as well. Interesting tie ins there.

They’ve already begun to roll out great content......Gears 5 Hivebusters, Ori, Flight Simulator and many more all happened this year. Next year the onslaught begins. It’s an exciting time to be a XBOX gamer. 35 teams is an incredibly impressive number.

23 studios each making a single game every 4 years means an exclusive game every other month. Once these get fully underway, it's GG. There's no way Sony can keep up with its paltry number of studios, these are the last couple years they have any advantage simply because of covid and studios being too newly acquired. Plus, we already know Microsoft has billions more dollars earmarked for more acquisitions they haven't spent yet - due to them trying to buy WB games. So expect more acquisitions over the coming years.

The characters and worlds Tim has created are unbelievable. I just played through Grim Fandango and Brutal Legend for the first time (thanks to Game Pass), and I was blown away. After I finished those two, I immediately bought Psychonauts on OG XBox to get familiar with that world before Psychonauts 2 releases. I can't wait to play through it this weekend.

Brütal Legend was pretty amazing but I don't think too many people cared about the RTS aspect of it. It was there and it was kinda neat but it also didn't really contribute to the overall feel of the game. If they made another one I can see them reevaluating that whole thing, maybe just make it a hack'n'slash with some other mechanics thrown in. Maybe make it a hack'n'slash/3d platformer like the Darksiders games or something more artsy like Control or Remember Me. Not sure what I would prefer honestly, I mostly played the game for all the great cutscenes and the one liners... also them Legends! xD

I have been waiting for this game since the launch of Psychonauts. When they announced the fundraiser It was the first (and only) Crowdfunded game I actually believed in. It was a Very happy day. I'm so happy to see its finally coming out relatively soon. Also. I would love to see a Double Fine Banjo-Kazooie. I think they would make a much better version than modern RARE could.

Great interview. Gamepass is a really good model for their stuff, which anyone could easily fall in love with if they’d give it a bit of a chance. One thing all their games have in common is I recommend them forever once I actually play them. Now I can do it even more and I’m not actually asking anyone to buy anything. Their games are a little like stockholm syndrome, but in the good way? You know, you have to sit there with it for a bit, but once you do? Yikes. I think hhey should be featured a little more by Microsoft as a show of good faith (kind of like the poster in the background and this video) as long as you’re putting a big stamp up saying “this is good” eventually people look. I guess if they weren’t the biggest underdogs in the room they wouldn’t be quite as cool though, huh? No I’m pretty sure they’d be cool no matter what.

I don't think Double Fine has made super great platforming games, I know people love Psychonauts but I don't think it's a great platformer. Double Fine should definitely do all the things they do and not worry about people's dream matchups. Anyhow, Stacking is my favorite game from them, a wonderful time, that.

I agree. I love Psychonauts but purely as a platformer it’s not bad but it’s also nothing special. The sheer creativity in art direction, environments, story and the weird adventure game elements put into a platformer (some of the latter powers you obtain and their uses, like claravoyance...) make that game. It almost reminds me of Yoko Taro’s games, before Platinum came a long you had some really cool ideas stapled onto an OK game engine.

Despite Psychonauts, their strengths really aren’t in pure platforming action and physics. What would be cool is a dev like rare in charge of the pure basic gameplay loop and feel, and then Doublefine in charge of literally everything else (story, environments, characters, art direction...)

The obsession with Game Pass annoys the shit out of me because Sony has the same thing with PS Now, but nobody ever talks about it. The only difference is that Sony does not release all of their new titles on PS Now, and that many of the PS Now titles are only available via streaming, but many are available to download too. It's an awesome service that nobody knows about , and it certainly doesn't receive the accolades it d deserves.
