Is it possible that Jesus was preaching to those who never heard the gospel? A big objection that atheists often say is “what about the poor person born into a country where nobody has heard of Jesus?”

That is one of the commonly taught possibilities, however you do need to read a lot into the text to get there. The context of the passage doesn't really support the view. Thanks.
