We talk a lot about Road Strategy on MCrider but sometimes it takes a story like this to understand the importance of good road strategy applied on a consistent basis.
Tiffany tells the story of how one Road Strategy skill saved her from a really bad crash.

One time I was sitting a light (1st in line) waiting to make a right ( no turn on red). When the light turned green something told me to wait and look left, just as I looked left a car came speeding through the red light at about 50 or 60 mph. If I had gone there is no doubt I would not be here today to share this story. At that moment I felt so grateful for who or what ever told me to wait and look left. That day I can't say it was road strategy but more of an invention of my guardian angle. For having that happen to me, I now wait for a moment or two, three, or four to make sure everyone is stopping at the red light giving me just a small chance to ride another day!

One more: when I taught my sons to drive, I have each of then the ugliest little troll doll (very small) to keep on the dashboard of the car. I told them, “This troll has a name. It’s ICKY, which stands for Impatience Can Kill You. Never be in such a rush to get somewhere you put your life, or the life of another person, in jeopardy. The other person driving fast might get there a minute or two before you arrive - or they might not ever get there at all.” ICKY. Good to read all these comments of riders not being in a rush to jump into the intersections!

I'm not too good at waiting X seconds on a fresh green light, but I ALWAYS look Left-then-Right at least once before entering that intersection. I've been riding for 49 years so far and this has saved my life at least twice that I know of. While we're chatting about intersections, I should mention that when I make a right turn on red (after stopping) I always assume that someone coming from my left in the #1 lane may change lanes in the intersection (into "my" #2 lane). I learned this in a 6" near-miss lesson when I had been riding about 2 years, and it taught me why this is illegal in CA.

My name is Dickie Koeppen sr and I was riding to my son's house to ride a toy ride.I was almost there when I was looking as far ahead as possible and I saw a deer on the side of the road I started slowing down.once I was where he was he ran out in front of me and I used the emergency braking and save me from being in a bad situation.I wanted to thank you for telling us all how to do that properly.thanks again and keep up the good work.

It's better that she learned it by seeing what can happen, than having it actually happen TO her as a novice rider. I always enjoy hearing when a fellow rider avoided being in an wreck. Keep riding safe, Tiffany.

I had never heard the "three second" phrase but try to always, always look right, look left THEN LOOKING RIGHT AND LOOKING LEFT a second time.... which probably takes every bit of three seconds.

Nice work posting these learning videos. I've been a rider since 10 yrs old, (now going on 50 years of continuous riding) dirt and street riding. I had to learn so many lessons the hard way until real world training came into being, like the Stayin Safe training folks and now MCrider. I see so many people riding that have little skill, who are a crash in waiting, running on pure luck that nothing will happen. Then there are those who use the public roads as raceways and stunt shows. Karma will probably get most of them some day. Parting thought, maybe self driving cars will make it safer for us on two wheels? That assumes the technology is designed to recognize the smaller footprint that motorcyclists present. One can hope that we aren't forgotten in that future environment. Keep up the good work on safer riding skill development and be safe out there.

Thanks for another valuable tool in my safety belt. Risk assessment is my top priority when I ride. For me, and many of us, riding is a transcendental experience with levels of pure joy and deep fulfillment, unlike many other pursuits. At times, I find myself nearly lost in those moments...but the training I've received from MCrider quickly kicks in and returns me to the most important focus- returning home safely to ride another day.

I had a similar incident, after my light turned green I double checked traffic in both directions and saw a small pickup coming from the right and I could tell he was not going to stop, as he went through the red light in front of me he just waved at me and kept going. Always double check traffic before you go through an intersection. Safe riding!
@Silverwinger82

That is eerily similar to something that happened to me twenty some years ago. I was approaching an intersection slowly, waiting for the light to change. I timed it right, because the light changed to green for me right before I got to it. As I entered the intersection, I saw a car coming from my right doing close to double the 30 mph speed limit. I stopped, thinking there's no way that car could stop even if they tried (which she didn't). The car that was stopped at the light, going the opposite direction as me, started going when the light turned green. The impact was about 6 feet away from me. Had I not stopped, I would have been sandwiched between the two cars.

Great riding tips and advice. I'd like to add; When I'm riding on a 2 lane street where the flow of traffic is going in the same direction and a car stops in the next lane with no other cars in front of that car, I stop next to the stopped car. The stopped driver might be letting people cross the street or letting a car go in front to merge into traffic. I've seen accidents where a car stops and the car in the next lane goes through hitting the car turning in front of the stopped car. I wasn't taught this in my car driver's education class. This is something I learned on the road. I've never had an accident in this scenario. I apply this safety technique when I ride my motorcycle.

Terrific reminder! Kevin, I like this video of hearing another rider chiming in on the lessons you give. More of those, please. As far as this episode with Tiffany (and kudos to her for sharing!), I have yet to meet the person who has knowledge of the day/time/place they’re going to have an accident. I’ve never woken up and thought “I better suit up in all my gear today because I’m going to be in an accident at 3:17 PM at the corner of Main and Broadway...” like Tiffany said we take these steps because we never know when it’s going to make a huge difference - maybe even a life or death difference. Keep up the great work!

I had a similar incident happen to me when I was in college. One night I was on my way home at about 1 o’clock in the morning and I was stopped at a light. Normally when the light changed I would gun the gas and get going. On this night I did not and all the sudden I saw two cars come speeding through the intersection. Both cars were racing AND had a red light. All I could think of was that if I was in the middle of that it would have been bad.

Divine intervention. About 10 plus years ago, I was riding home from a bike event. Where one decision saved me. I had decided to make a left at a light instead of going straight. The was a car in front of me, and a minivan in the right lane going straight. We were all waiting on the light when a drunk driver slammed into the minivan and pushed it out into the intersection. The guy in the car took off. I think about it at time and thank God that I had for the thought to turn instead of going straight. That one event has also instilled in me to watch my surroundings and behind me at a stop. Position my bike in a way if I am behind a vehicle at a stop I am in the position to get out of the way or in the least not be sandwiched between two vehicles.

Tiffany - Good Job Girlfriend !!! - I employ the same thought processes. Here in Phoenix, AZ - it has to be one of the worst. Many times while riding (or driving for that matter) - sitting at a red light, waiting to do "whatever" - I see people run red lights every day - many, many times. Very well said. Wait, look, look again, and look again. Always, without question, you HAVE to be ABSOLUTLEY CERTAIN that it is completely clear, and safe to proceed. Sorry about having to witness that terrible crash. Glad to hear they are all doing as well as they are. The accident part of your story could have turned out much worse. Your riding skills and (obviously) your road strategies reflect someone who has been riding for many, many years. Keep it up :) Another Great one Kevin. Love the new intro too.

I turn left from a triggered traffic light onto a 55 mph State route going to work every morning normally empty roads at 6 am. Several times a year my light turns green and I wait as, usually a semi truck but sometimes just a car, blasts through the red light at estimating 65-70 mph. On occasion, someone has come up behind me and let me know their annoyance that I seem to not be paying attention just as a truck blasts through the red. Car, motorcycle, doesn't matter to me, I never enter any intersection on green until I've seen no one is going to run the red. Happens at the intersection above probably 5 times a year. Car or motorcycle, I'd be dead if I pulled out in front of a 70 mph semi truck.

I see bikers split lanes getting to the front of the left turn lane, and then take off when the light is green. I never really have the desire to be the first 'to go' when the light changes. It is kind of always in the back of my mind, that those who do that, maybe the first to encounter that rare time when someone runs the light. Yes good road strategy all the time is the best way to be prepared.

I follow a Vlogger named SerpentZA (Winston Sperzel) on KZbin. Coincidentally, today he posted observations (lots of videos) on Chinese drivers. Many of these observations were made from the seat of a motor scooter, and he has done documentaries of motorcycle trips all over China. So in addition to what Tiffany spoke about today, we probably need to also make major adjustments about the expectations about our fellow drivers when we ride outside the USA or around tourist areas in the USA. Honest to goodness, Winston actually showed a guy on a motorcycle come straight across four lanes of traffic to hit Winston's bike probably around the front forks. I guess it pays to keep the Go-Pro running at all times!

This very thing happened to me about a month ago except I was on the inside lane of a double-left. The other lane had a corvette both of us waiting for the green arrow. I decided to let him lead since the on ramp we were headed to for the freeway merged into one lane. Sure enough just as we started to go at the green a woman ran the light and destroyed that corvette's front end. Everyone okay and I didn't even realize it until the guy following me later remarked, "If you had gone first she definitely would have killed you." Only been riding a little over a year now - made me think.

I don't think luck has anything to do with it. Both you and Tiffany practice. What's one of the objectives of practicing: being prepared for those occasions when trouble is on the horizon. Tiffany's decision to employ the three-second rule probably saved her life. Kevin, what you preach makes us all better, safer riders. When we use these acquired skills, luck has nothing to do with it. You and Tiffany are safer because you develop and practice good road skills. My comment to Tiffany would be: good job! Thanks Kevin. I think you have underestimated the importance of following distance in avoiding accidents (I know this wasn't a scientific sort of thing). My reason for saying this is that with proper following distance you can generally avoid anything that happens in front of you on the road, other cars wrecking, debris, potholes etc. It won't do much for things coming from the side but most traffic accidents are front to rear, not from the side. I would even postulate that most traffic accident blamed on "excessive speed" are really the result of following too close unless it's lack of traction on a curve. Just my food for thought for the day.

We have a lot of 4 way stops here. We also have seen a relatively big population growth, many people from seemingly impatient areas. Very many folks seem to not see a need to come to a full stop at a 4 way stop. Some don't even slow down. Are you not stopping and going to roll over me? Does your car die when you come to a full stop? I don't know, but I don't want to be finding out that you really didn't see me while intimately hugging your car. Another big gripe are the people in a hurry that want to tailgate me. Don't care in my truck, do care, a lot, on the bike. I open my left hand and do a push back motion, that helps with at least 95% of the people, they just don't seem to realize it, but not always. Even better is tailgating through a section of roadwork close by where I live. Then again, tailgating is what the Washington State Patrol always does to everybody, in an attempt to get more tickets from people speeding up. I'm not a fan.

If more drivers were more cognizant about their surroundings the roads would be a lot safer. Unfortunately that will never happen. I always look behind and continue to look left, right and what’s coming toward me when the light turns green.

I have another one, but the kids say Aristotle said it better. Mine is "The more you know, the less you know you know.". Aristotle famously wrote, “The more you know, the more you realize you don't know.” I came up with mine independent of Aristotle. Okay, Greek guy gets the creds...

Thought I'd toss this out there. This past spring I got run off the road. I was skirting a downtown area and was headed into a Left turn and slowing. In my right mirror I saw mostly grill coming my way. I turned sharply and a car went by me within inches. I crashed, the car kept going and no nearby witnesses. A very near miss. My responses were entirely reflexes. Got back on my bike and went home to deal with a knee the size of a cantaloupe and a torn meniscus in my left knee. Thing is, as i reviewed the incident I was wondering; did I do something wrong, could I have handled things better? So I'm looking for some input. I'm back on the road, the bike and I both needed some minor repairs and we're good.

the problem with 3 seconds is that only three cars can get through a green light. That is why I keep looking at all the cars, left right, mirrors, over and over a gain at the light. When it turns green I have been looking, no new information!

Kevin, what are your thoughts on motorcyclists that lane filter/split to the front at a set of lights and have fast starts on the green light to get ahead of the traffic. No 3 second rule there or a car will roll into you.
