I really like this way of looking at a character's internal struggle. Showing conflicting strong values goes deeper than the standard "internal need vs external want." Thanks very much!

Expelled vs dead also comes up in a skit where Rowan Atkinson plays a school principal and talks to an unruly child's parents about disciplinary "fatal beatings". I can't remember the show name.

Such a great video. Thank you for using a wide range of examples, too. I'm so tired of seeing examples from Pride and Prejudice and the Hunger Games from other KZbinrs lol I'm terrible at coming up with complex characters, so I want to try this method. It seems like fun!

I have a pinpoint character introduction in a standalone mystery of mine. (It is how-dunnit or a why-dunnit as opposed to a who-dunnit; our protagonist/sleuth has an idea of who, and a hunch why but explaining the whole thing is tricky.) In the opening he risks his own safety to preserve justice; however, when the criminal begins to use deadly force, my protagonist freaks out. He is saved by someone else. By the climax, his values swap; and he nearly dies as a result of trying to protect a victim he doesn't even know.

thank you for a new perspective on creating a comples character that will mean something to readers. I am often blocked by inner versus outer or deep wound. This helps the writing get started, other stuff can up when it's ready to be revealed by subconscious.
