When fighting minibosses using smile i recommend to save the normal enemies as easy heals if you ever get down to about 100 hp

Also in my opinion, smile can be better than birding up Mostly due to smile having the ability recoup alot of hp per corpse or kill, and a large AOE attack ability that can stun. it can regen heath normally like an Asylumer too. Yes the birds have some impressive abilities, but the lack of heath regen is its biggest downside, especially in long battles. Not to mention the default heath on kill only gives 15-25 hp per kill, which isnt enough for the birds massive health pool.
