Thank you, Katie, for sharing your insight on what Paul was trying to communicate in his letter to Timothy.
@sjarjoura91884 жыл бұрын
With regards to 1 Tim. 2, I would like to suggest that the passage is not necessarily transcultural, nor do I think that Paul was trying to create a stumbling block for women’s participation in worship/ministry. Certainly the Christian faith is dependent on the work of the Holy Spirit in us (who are empty vessels ready to be filled by Him), and His gifting according to His mercy and grace. Verses in the Bible such as Joel 2:28 clearly leaves no one out, and there’s no shortage of verses and examples in the Bible, along with historical and present day accounts of God moving mightily in women, including in the role of teaching. So I can’t see Paul ostracizing women from this role as a generally applied directive, but rather a specific instruction for a particular time and context - and I believe the text supports this argument. Many read this passage and automatically jump to the negative narrative, and assert that Paul is being misogynistic, when in fact he is actually trying to protect the women of that time from judgement. I believe that Dickson’s argument of the difference between “teaching” and “preaching” is valid and applicable. We know this when we look at other passages where Paul makes the distinction between these gifts (1 Cor. 12:28, Rom. 12:4-8, etc.), and as you read his and other letters, it is clear that this distinction was understood among 1st Century Christians. In James 3:1, James strongly cautions the brethren/believers about not seeking to become “teachers”, because there is a greater judgement for those who teach incorrectly. “Teaching” is meant for those who can read, interpret and explain the Word correctly, whereas “Preaching” is intended for witnessing and sharing the good news after one has been taught. Paul is discouraging women of that time from “teaching”, not “preaching”. (and not from prophesying, speaking in tongues, performing miracles or any other gifting/ministry either). It is clear from the passage that women were not in a position to be properly equipped to teach. You need mentorship to become a “teacher”, similar to how Paul studied under Gamaliel (Acts 22:3), but this was not available to women of that time - only to men - and he didn’t want women to use their new-found freedom to assume the role of teaching without proper training (additionally, considering the very low literacy rates of the time among men, women would be even less privileged to have an education, making matters worse). So given the opportunity, there’s no reason why women can’t teach or be Pastors. Paul uses the illustration from Genesis because God told Adam directly about the forbidden fruit in Genesis 2, prior to Eve being formed. Adam would have shared the knowledge about the forbidden fruit with Eve after she was formed. When Eve was tempted/questioned by the serpent/devil, she was unable to correctly respond/deceived, and eventually sinned, causing judgement on herself and Adam (to be clear, Adam sinned as well). Paul is basically trying to explain how important it is to have a full understanding and knowledge of the word, otherwise you will be prone to fail/sin, which the women of that time would have been in a position to do so. Paul ends the passage about women “saved through childbearing”, not in the context that this is their only purpose (as Augustine incorrectly interpreted and asserted), nor that every women who gives birth gets saved and goes to heaven, but rather imploring women of that time that, if they want to do good, then they can carry out a very important role of “teaching” (without facing judgement, and thus “saved”): which is to raise up Godly children “in faith, love and holiness with propriety”.

This is not honest with Greek being used. Unless by "all men everywhere" you think Paul means only men in Ephesus at that particular time, you can't make the argument you're making. The presence of "hosautos" linking the first part to the second indicates his second command is as universal as his first. Further - he roots the command to women in a universal theological reality, not a present distress in a particular church.

Thank you for this. It's a timely message and one that needs to be discussed. These scriptures have been taken out of context so often to perpetuate a patriarchal system that keeps women in spiritual bondage. Women were designed to lead, along with men. The women I know who have been called into leadership are not demanding that they be placed there. They are simply being obedient to the call of God on their lives. It's tragic that a woman may be the only person standing between a man and an open door to hell and some men will be lost as a result because they can't get past the vessel to recognize the Voice of God speaking through her. I recommend "10 Lies the Church Tells Women" by J. Lee Grady. It breaks these scriptures down and offers a very compelling explanation in regard to the whole of scripture.

@@Dale65378 I believe that all scripture is God breathed and inspired. I don’t believe, however, in the interpretation that many men have used to keep women in bondage using this scripture. This entire section of scripture, from vs 26 to 40 is about orderly worship, prophesying, and conduct when meeting together. When men are afraid of Chayil women, they’ll always seek to put her in a box and prevent her from being who God created and called her to be. That’s not God, that’s a lie from the pit of hell and any man adhering to this ‘doctrine’ is partnering with demons, not the Holy Spirit. God is Spirit and He doesn’t give women Holy Spirit Jr. Women have the same Holy Spirit given to men. And since God is no respecter of persons why would He limit His work in women because they’re women? The answer is, He wouldn’t and He doesn’t. @Aurora_is_sleepy5 ай бұрын
Hi, from what I can tell from the text and context, I do believe it would make sense for Paul to not regard teaching the men proper teachings because in fact during the time period men were already given access to those teachings and had the knowledge, but as it is known, women were not given that access to knowledge. Instead they were given access to deceptive knowledge which only caused more confusion. Paul instructs these women to stop tlaking in and out of church only because they are given wrong information and aren’t given the proper knowledge to speak on the word, because in fact, they were not taught the word at all. Paul doesn’t want lies about the gospel being spread by uneducated people, and at the time women were the majority of uneducated people’s. I hope this helps ❤

Why is everything about gender equality? As a Christian aren't you missing the point of Genesis 3:16-17 and why Paul mentioned it in 1 Timothy 2:15? It was a woman who was deceived not man, but man chose to sin. Both were guilty of course, but you have to look to what God said to Eve. 1 Genesis 3:16b. Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.” According to the bible in 1 Corinthians 11:3. But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. Women are to be loved, respected, and have been given gifts to serve, just as men have, but women are not to preach. Why are women fighting what the bible clearly teaches?

I'm sorry I don't know the name of this woman so refer to her as 'she' and 'her' - no impoliteness intended. Much of what this woman says is true concerning 1 Timothy. It is largely correctional - as are most epistles. Paul is Timothy's mentor encouraging him to fight the good fight - which means combatting false teaching. And of course context is very important in determining meaning. But it is also true that we cannot always piece together the context - and when that is the case we must be honest and not go beyond it. Sadly this lady does just that. She paints a picture as if she knows what she is talking about - but no-one can know what she claims - she goes too far. Her comment quoting Fee is a good example - it is true phlyaros literally means 'nonsense' rather than what we tend to call gossip but she concludes they were engaded in propogating false teaching - which is certainly not at all remotely implied by the word phlyaros. Of course it is possible the lady's assertions are correct - but she has no basis for it and we have no way of knowing it. I say respectfully, there needs to be a little more humility in her claims. She seems to be arguing that women were a major problem in the church at Ephesus with regard to false teaching. She bases this on very scant evidence indeed - pretty much clutching at straws you could say. She goes to a lot of trouble to paint a very specific picture. The problem is - a conext arising from personal convenience or fantacy is worse than knowing you do not know the context. The fact the epistle is correctional (as she acknowledges) is the most helpul aspect to understand. Knowing that - and there we agree, we can learn a great deal. Eg ... We should note that in chapter 1 there is no hint at all that women had any particular roll in false teaching - they may have - we just cannot know. In chapter 2 - understanding the epistle to be correctional, we can deduce that in ther church in Ephesus there was a wrong attitude to governments and authorities - Paul corrects that by exorting prayer and thanks being giving for them and he explains why (verses 1-7). We can deduce from verse 8 the men were characteristically engaged in angry dusputes and put their energy into that, Paul corrects this by urging them to put their energy into engaging in prayer - leading the way as men of prayer. We can deduce from verses 9-10 that the women were overly concerned with their external appearance rather than nurturing their inner beauthy as women of God - as is often the case today. Verse 11 suggests that either women were either not being allowed to 'learn' at all or were disruptive during times of learning - whatever Paul is clear (a) they should learn and (b) in quietness and full submission. We can deduce from verse 12 that women were being allowed to assume a teaching role and authority in the church and perhaps claimed Pauline apostolic authority. Paul is clear that he does not permit any woman to teach or have authority over a man. Paul then gives his theological reasons - (1) Adam was formed first and then Eve - implying a certain order of authority - and (2) Adam was not decieved - it was the woman - and so became a sinner - the implication being either (1) Women are more prone to deception and so should not teach men (highly unlikely) or (2) the consequence of the reversal of role and function (Eve took the lead and Adam followed) resulted in sin - illustrating the folly of reverseing God's order and making the case to retain it.

Does God change? False teachers and their claim that these books written to the early are limited to that time and or place, is spiritually sick. The truth is in plain sight. Yes there were false teachers but there wag also women who were teaching men and desiring to overrule their husbands and the men appointed to lead the men in the Lord then there was the establishing of the correct and orderly ways to hold church proceedings. If you had any kind of spiritual maturity then you would know that there is no limit to what you can learn from God in HIS WORD! Paul takes us back, not just them at Ephesus nor is it limited to that exact era but he takes us back to the creation event to show that before the fall, even before time began man was formed first and then the woman and the woman is of the man, from man and is under the man's authority. 1 Corinthians 11 Therefore for the woman to overrule a man, any man IN THE LORD, and lead him, is to blaspheme the Word of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 11 Furthermore, Paul created a new context within the broad context of the book to correct the church at Ephesus and for any church that might fall under the same example, whenever that may be.

Fools end up being tools for the enemy and become a hindrance instead of a help for the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is not about a radical feminist agenda. This is about the restoration and reconciliation of the new creation in Christ Jesus that was accomplished at the Cross of Calvary. Jesus shed His blood to restore both men and women to their rightful place as joint heirs and co-rulers, not dominant and subordinate roles. 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” These verses were the original pattern and design for both men and women. Nowhere in these scriptures does it say,"Man you rule, and woman you follow his rule." The dominant patriarchal system resulted from the fall. It was not God's original design for us.

Ok so at the time women were not allowed the right to be educated, therefore, women didn’t understand how to read, didn’t understand literature, basically just couldn’t read the Bible. So, as uneducated people, elder men of the church basically dumbed down a lie to tell women and make them believe it that was a lie about the gospel. These women being uneducated, took it to heart because they thought it was the truth and so they began to “spread the word” so in this passage Paul is sharing how these women (who were just basically uneducated people) need to be quiet in church because they aren’t educated and don’t know the actual word. With this passage Paul is trying to convey that uneducated people should educate themselves first in order to interpret the word into its true meaning and not the meaning that was told to them. It is not the women’s fault that they were told lies it is the fault that they were bait given a proper education. Paul is sharing that until women get this education they are to be silent. You're reading into scripture and adding something that isn't there. Furthermore, men generally have issues with pride more than women do and because of that, don't think they need to go to church or pursue a relationship with God as a result.

@@CGdone Judges Chapter 4 Deborah says in verse 6 to him “Behold, the Lord, the God of Israel, has commanded, ‘Go and march to Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men from the sons of Naphtali and from the sons of Zebulun. 7 I will draw out to you Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his many troops to the river Kishon, and I will give him into your hand." God of Israel commanded "There I will give you victory over him." This was already God's blessing to him. But since he was lacked faith in God's command demanding Deborah's presence. Deborah did reply saying "Very well, I will go with you. But since you have made this choice, you will receive no honor. For the LORD's victory over Sisera will be at the hands of a woman." His Honor was retracted because of his choice. Anyone who loves the world does not have the Father in them. For the lust of the flesh the lust of the eyes and the pride of life do not come from the Father, but from the world. The world and its desires pass away but the one who does the Will of God lives forever. 1 John 2 15-17 The husbands who are prideful like that are not right, they turn away from God for their own reasons.

@@James-uu6xs I believe Barak had a lack of faith about his ability to win and that's why he asked Deborah to go with him. Despite that, the issue I raised has nothing to do with Barak. Deborah was a judge with the same rights and privileges that every judge appointed by God over Israel had. She was anointed and chosen by God and that's why she succeeded. If God had wanted a guy during that time, he would've appointed one. He's more than capable of doing that. I mean, look at Saul and David. God chooses who He wants to choose. Some people, can't accept that and that's not God's problem...that's the person who rejects His choice's problem. God is no respecter of persons.

Gender equality is concept of human worship and raising sinners up to be closer to God. Proverbs 30:5-6. I find this lady talking about false teaching very ironic - 1 Timothy talks about people EXACTY like her.

Dont you think an all knowing God could have said women and men are different and equal? 1 Timmothy 2 12 is very clear. You really have to do back bends to justify this. Why is that? How would you know the authors intent? Very unconvincing story you are trying to spin.

1 Tim 2 says that a woman should not teach or have authority over man because of the creation account described in Genesis. This video does not honestly address this instruction and its Genesis context that universally applies today but instead uses slippery words to misrepresent what Paul said about the Genesis account to convey the message that the context was not Genesis but instead it was the church at the time so she can say that context does not apply today - this is most dishonest and can be seen for what it is when one reads what Paul wrote rather than what katia Adams said he wrote.

@@anna-eo5705 there is absolutely 0 scripture you can use to try an oppose what 1 Timothy 2:11-14 says, it makes it clear as day, what women should and should not do, and even gives an explanation on why, there’s nothing you nor anyone else can do to change that
