Our family farm in northern MN has lots of box elders…growing up I hated them…they grow like weeds and tip over. Then a couple years ago I started watching Jeff’s videos. I noticed that the deer are in those areas. They are eating the branches and chutes. Now I love them. Diversity is still key though. One of many lessons I’ve learned watching his videos! Thanks Jeff/Brandon!!

My favorite is hedgeapple/osage orange, 3yrs ago, I put a ladderstand in one. It was great cover and deer annihilate the hedge apples. On many occasions, fawns would pick them up whole and toss them, then chase after. Fun to watch. I shot 2 of my biggest bucks out of that stand.

Have lots of young box elder growing. The main seed tree fell over last year unfortunately. But the deer don’t seem to browse them when I do hinge them. The most prolific tree growing in the reverting fields are green ash. I don’t know where all of the ash seeds came from. So far they are still alive.

I am surprise no mention of the Chestnut tree. Grows like a fruit tree, drops mast like an Oak. Not sure if it hinge cuts well. But nutrient wise it’s almost a perfect mix of protein and carbohydrates for the whitetail deer

Their nuts are gone before most bow seasons and they rarely produce a nut north of the southern MN, WI, MI, NY state lines. Very cool as an orchard with tons of mast produced over a large scale in southern OH, IN, IL, etc...and further south, but not a very good tree overall for mast crop timing and winter production in northern zones.

I'm in Southern Ohio, zone 6B & i'm planting 3 Chinese Chestnut trees in late October, along w/ 3 Apple trees & a Maekawa Persimmon....Had a back ho dig 3' deep holes, we had a Big rain & the holes held water 2 days so i'm planning on adding amendments b/c it's kinds hard pan, then plant a bit high, as in a raised bed...most trees don't like wet feet....they'll die......

Love them trees also. When I get a pocket like that I like to flush cut some just a few inches off the ground. I believe a deer lives from the ground to 4ft so like to put the food in that range

I like them all Jeff they each have their own use in my opinion. But box enders seem the best deer tree like you stated. My logger said the same thing I had a short and very to the point discussion with him about my land being for deer, and not timber growth! He got it pretty quickly!!!! Lol!!! Great video!

Can’t count how many times I’ve heard people bash box elders and praise oaks and maples. Yet you go walk through the woods and you find the box elders are the best all around for wildlife. Cover, browse, low-hanging limbs are natural scrape locations. Now I can use your video to back me up! Haha

Last year we bought a place mid summer. Fields with various weeds that deer were using for bedding during the summer. And then some small wood pockets. I planted a good plot in the field but I need more diversity pockets. I started planting fruit trees. I want to rub rows of switchgrass to divide it up to eliminate social pressure between the deer. This year I will be adding some more fruit trees, creating some edging with service berry, plum ticket, tree dogwood, and slimy dogwood as well. It's taking time but once everything is established I should have good bedding as I also work on creating bedding layers. Good travel corridors and a lot of daytime activity. I also implemented a water hole which has been a great success. I have couple oaks that will produce in 3-5 years.

i have 10 acres in Southern Ohio & 60-70 years ago it was corn fields, then when they stopped farming it mostly went to cedars....Nothing grows under them..!! I just retired so i had the time so i just cleared off a hillside of Big & small cedars & poplars, sold many logs for 2.oo each & burned up the rest....have planted Keiffer pear & Jiro Persimmons already & will plant more Asian Persimmons & 3 Apple trees this mid October, , along w/ 3 Chinese Chestnuts.....PS. if i saw a box elder i'm sure i wouldn't know what it was....My soil isn't great so i'm hoping they all do well....I lost one Persimmon already to ants/termites....

The area I hunt in NY has a lot of red oak, apple, crab apple, and dog woods. I added red osier dogwood this past spring and am looking at adding more diversity to my 22.5 acres. Would Honey locust be a good addition? Also going to add some pear trees around my food plot, and maybe some chestnut trees. I have only owned this property for a year and with your help through these videos have seen a nice increase in deer. I am just looking to add good diversity and have the upper edge vs neighboring properties.

Would you suggest strictly hinge cutting the boxelders then so it lays as a cover and regenerates? Will it still sucker and regenerate as well if it’s clean cut off the stump?
@George-ro6bw

Good information Jeff. The Box Elder is very prolific where there is damp/wet soil. After being introduced in 1688 as a park tree in Europe It didn’t take long to spread across Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. Best to keep an eye on this maple species if you don’t want them taking over your bottom land. Since deer like diversity in food, what other browse do you recommend to carry deer through December through March?

Hi Jeff, the box elder tree you show as hinged in here is much larger in diameter (2-8 inches) than what you recommended in your latest hinge cut video. Up to what diameter should we be hinging or is it tree specific?

Before watching this Jeff, my guess is that it’s going to be box elder. Regardless, my question is, can you throw box elder seeds into standing golden rod in the spring and spray a pre emergent to help eliminate new weeds this coming spring green up?

Collect seed in early fall. Winter stratify them in the fridge with some perlite. Then plant in potting soil in containers in spring. Then fall plant. High success rate of germination. I've tried broadcast seeding with little luck due to competition.
