Christen Press and Kelly O'Hara make the best passes. Tobin Heath is my forever favorite! By forcing myself to watch her in the 2008 Olympics, I learned enough about the game to finally appreciate it. She has been a mainstay force in the game for over 11 years now and hasn't lost a step.

Thanks so much for the complete coverage including all the excellent commentary between Julie Foudy and Kate Markgraf. This total package is the bomb!
The camera shots of all the young girls in the stadium with their overflowing enthusiasm is so priceless and just the tip of the national ice berg. We need multiple hundreds more playing fields to accommodate this burgeoning interest in the game. FIFA is increasing the number of teams next time from 24 to 32. This will drive the international enthusiasm over the tournament to a near fever pitch for the women's game alone.

They don't have to go very far to find a replacement coach, the Co-captain of the USA national soccer team 37 years old Carly Lloyd. She has the soccer skills, the soccer experience, the communication skills, the listening skills, Carly Lloyd is very well liked, admired and respected by all her team mates and peers plus she has a great likeable and humble personality which make her a good and efficient team manager and an amazing USA national soccer coach. I believe that Carly Lloyd could carry on the USA women national soccer team dynasty for the next 20 years. It will be a great mistake by the USA women national soccer federation not to hire Carly Lloyd as the next head coach for the USA women national soccer team. Antonio.

Eloy...I see where your head's at. It would be cool. Maybe in a few years, if that's her desire. Beyond the olys coming up. How often do you see that in any sport...a veteran career coming to a close and jumping right back in as a head coach? Anyone would probably hit the couch for a few seasons, take a breather and take stock of their options. I would've suggested O'Reilly before the WC, but unfortunately, she opened her mouth and made a fool of herself on television. Ha. It was cringe worthy and don't get me started on Lalas (what an imbecile). But, it is a shame you don't see any former players turn coach. Imagine Solo as a coach...that would be one tight ship!

@G K ...yeah, I can't go there. She held this team back. She came in at a great time, with the best resources and the best talent pool. And they've been off kilter the whole time. Sure, they won this one. They've lost others. I felt this WC was a lackluster. They beat up on Thailand and partially Chile and did just enough to dominate flow and outlast everyone else. The team deserves the accolades for rising over the multi-managing...not the coach.

After watching the World Cup games, I was wondering who was calling the shots in terms of the tactical decisions and Julie Foudy answered my question. It seems like that USWNT assistant coach, Gustavsson had a major role in how this team played in terms of tactics. he also had much of the direct hands-on of when it came time to talk with the players on the field during the games. It is almost like he was the head coach and not Jill Ellis. If you look back at many of the games, it was assistant coach Gustavsson wearing the headset carrying around what looks like an iPad of some sort and he seems to be the one in the coaches box quite a bit and when they show him with Jill Ellis and another assistant coach sitting together it seems like he is the one in charge. I am having trouble believing that Jill Ellis, with all the mistakes she has made in the past, can all of a sudden make the kinds of decisions that help lead this current version of the USWNT to a championship. Jill relied heavily on the veterans when she put the final roster out for the world cup as seen by the choice of final callups, of Krieger and Brian. During the World Cup games, she as well relied on the veterans. She used Lloyd, Press, and Krieger as subs and switched from time to time Horan and Mewis and Lavelle. I actually looked up Tony Gustavsson's Wikipedia page and he has played 16 years as a professional player something Jill has none of, also has 14 years of coaching at the senior level. Jill never coached at the senior level until 2014 yes she was an assistant coach but never coach until 2014 when she was given the Job. My feeling is that she was relying heavily on Tony Gustavsson, for the tactical game plan because of his knowledge of soccer at the senior level something Jill again had none of either as a player or even as a coach. Is Jill Ellis a great coach or did she coach a great team with a lot of experience from not only the players but the assistant coaches as well? What are your thoughts?

That's a good take there Chris. I like that you linked what you saw during the matches. I didn't notice in the WC myself, but, can certainly add that I've seen him do much of what you said during the build up and in friendlies. Any time you catch audio of the bench...it's Gustavsson yelling. Didn't he announce his retirement too? I'd think that you know that I am no fan of Ellis. I'm happy she's stepping down and quickly too. Maybe we can finally get a decent keeper? The problem is with her experience. Prior to the senior team it has been all college teams and the US equivalent (u-20, u-21). 16 years in a plug and play scheme. They're kids, trying to figure out the game and themselves. There aren't a lot of consistent options and I think that translates to her coaching style at this level. She put out a constant, ever changing, never the same, line up...every game. That's what a college coach has to do as the players are unreliable. She had these 5 years and never found her groove. She never developed further as a coach. She couldn't trust that she made a correct decision and stick with it. Or she couldn't trust the players. The incessant flip over shows this. She can't evolve. Even right to the end...didn't she put Heath in as a defender for a half right before the WC? WTF? What a waste! I do not think she is great. She's ho hum, clueless, just throwing meatballs at the wall. She came in at the right time with a solid, unwavering core that did it themselves. Again! This team is a recycling machine of experience, expectations and organized style. They take care of themselves for the most part. A coach is mostly inconsequential in soccer. They really can only ruin it and never be the reason for winning. I think Ellis added restrictions and nearly did ruin it. The players play the game. It's a fluid game, in response to an unscripted adversary. Action reaction. They have to just ebb and flow with the tide. It's not something you can script and have set plays. They have a series of 3,4-pass movements they work on in drills and in game action, they just flawlessly fall back on them if they're in the right position and the field allows it. I think it's a testament to the players' abilities to overcome the chaos and just make it work. Which they barely did. Wasn't flashy. They left a tremendous amount on those fields.

If you actually followed the team, you would know that his roll was to focus primarily on offense while Jill focused on defense. I’m not a big fan of Jill, but to say he actually coached the team is sexist and ignorant. A good coach has a good team around them. That doesn’t mean she wasn’t involved. Sheesh.

@@kycone I been watching their games for a long time as far back as the 1999 USWNT World Cup championship game in the Rose Bowl. If you actually read my post, I stated it in the first two lines, that I was wondering who was actually calling the shots in terms of the tactical decisions. Nowhere in my post did a say he actually coached the team. She may have been involved and like you said she focused on defense. Frankly, after watching what she did with the defensive line over the last three years, going from a 4 person to three-person line and then putting a midfield player on the defensive line and watching what happened when she did that I have to wonder if she knew anything about rebuilding a defensive line. She saw in 2015 that it took a solid 4 person defensive line to win the 2015 World Cup yet she still went with only three until it blew up in her face in the "She Believes" and "Tournament of Nations" tournaments as soccer fans saw watching this team over the last three years. Curious how long have you been watching the USWNT games ??
