As a guy who has been collecting and sharpening knives his entire life, having amassed a collection worth more than my car, I have lots and lots of sharpening equipment, from $10 strops, to $300 Japanese stones, to $1400 Wicked edge system, to belt sanders and powdered diamond abrasives, I must say that for someone using a set of whetstones for the first time.... your form was very good! you did a much better job as holding angle, regulating pressure, and forming a burr than most people who are trying it for the first time. @@invertedsunhere’s the thing. The problem isn’t that the Ceroni is bad. The problem is that the Kraken Raken basically defined modern flipping after the squid trainer. It’s the definition of what a “good flipper” is. It’s specifically shaped geometrically to flip perfectly. The Cernoni being able to match that while not being shaped specifically for the purpose is a testament to the makers skill. The Krake Raken is described as boring because it’s a perfect flipper. Being able to match perfection while also being insanely creative is a master stroke

The advantage of the popsicle stick knife is its extremely cheap can probably be made with things already around the house, and because you have control on what the blade should be making it a blunt light wooden blade makes it a perfectly harmless fidget toy. I got my first butterfly knife in 1996 as a sophormore in high school. I got a vhs tape showing how to do tricks and fast forwarded past the safety part, into the advanced section, and went to school with bandaids on my fingers for the next two years. By the time I was a senoior I was really good at it, and had a few benchmade high end knifes by that point. I was good enough to have someone hold out their hand flat, and spin the knife into the air just a normil up throw and have it land in their hand open.

Fine grit stones can break if you "drown" them. Depends on what their insides are like. A light spray is all you need. Keep the surface wet while working the knife to get rid of the filings more easily.

For those curious on what the very expensive balisong at the end was, I believe that is the Ceroni Knives BaliReaper. Ceroni Knives is an independent balisong maker based in Italy who is very well known for making hand-crafted, ornate balisongs that focus more on form over function. Overall, Ceroni balisongs are more collectors pieces rather than performance flippers. The prices are absurd, and at the end of the day not worth it imo. But Ceroni products look damn cool.

Hye man I am very impressed with your sharpening on the whetstone for the first time. # 1. You had no inhibitions about putting a fancy expensive blade on the stone. this alone discourages many knife bros from ever actually trying. Knives are meant to be used! Bravo. #2, your technique was solid for someone first learning. Doing controlled edge trailing strokes while following the natural curve of the blade. Excellent work. Good job. A lot of knife bros falsely believe that they have grind edge leading, which is nonsense. Lastly & maybe most impressive of all, #3 this knife had zero edge bevel at all. you created it. which means you grinded a lot more steel than anyone would sharpening a normal knife that already has an edge bevel. that is NOT a job for a beginner, but you did it and did it amazingly well for someone new. Very common mistake for people learning is they dont understand what it takes to grind steel, much less stainless steels, much less fancier knife steels with even more abrasion resistance and thus lower machinability aka harder to grind, thus they don't use enough pressure and or quit before they've grinded enough to create a burr. that's all very impressive for someone that has never done it before. Knife bros make sharpening more complicated than it is, in reality it's easy to learn and anyone can do it, and you showed how it's done. good job. bravo. That was very cool.

Depending on how the knife was made, its is very important to do the same on both sides on the knife to remove ideally the same amount of material so your cutting edge stays aligned with the center, the reason for this is because a lot of knives are laminated steel with harder better cutting steels at the center and better more corrosion resistant materials on the sides.

Tip for the sharpness tester, go slow. Going fast messes with the results as it basically cuts the wire with your force instead of the knife’s edge
