One thing I learned in a semi-dry soil is to put water into the planting holes, let it sink, then plant up, water again. Plants should be firmly pushed into the soil. Hat bale mulch is a good idea in Spain. Shade cloth over new plantings should help roots develop.

You may need to plant marigolds around to deter pests, or put up bird feeders to get them to eat the pests. Lavender should grow well, they're good for attracting pollinators.

We soaked the bales before breaking them up & then again afterwards when we first put them in. But good idea for the second round of planting!

Hi, I am new here and I like how your video is done. Well done! I don't know if someone wrote here about planting trees in semi-arid areas. I planted more than a hundred trees in a similar location (not so arid) and there are important rules: after planting remove all branches, and just the trunk remains. Remove all fruits first two years. Water less frequently with larger quantities (20 liters at least every time). You must reduce nutrient consumption, and increase water intake under the roots - it is the way trees would better survive. I wish You the best of luck from the Czech Republic. Jaroslav

Hi if you guys put up some sun screen material above your crops it will help you a lot and you will use a lot less water and there won't be so much heat stress on your plants. The sun screens are worth the investment. Maybe you could build some type of ground pit lined with plastic to help you hold more water when it gets really hot/dry in the summer.

From watching so many videos of so many people homestead the biggest issue seems to be water. I wonder why so many more people dont build a dam to hold water, when it finally does come, to eliminate the problem of lack of water in their future.

The cabin? It is still fine and we use it for storage mainly at the moment. We plan to finish off the last bits next year because we would love to introduce Isabelle to camping and sleep up there sometimes. We have moved across the cooking stove, but need to make it a bit more child friendly in there before we stay overnight.

Really enjoyed the video showing all the ups and downs. Growing food and farming is not easy! I’m in Portugal and growing things here is VERY different to the UK. Summer is very difficult and shade is needed for many veg. Growing from autumn through to late spring is easier. Also the months of drought followed by very intense rainfall is difficult. Can you utilise some more rain-catching methods on your land eg swales, ponds etc?

As a fairly recently hooked subscriber.... to see that overview is brilliant. You have both come along so far and so well. Great to see. I have so many questions too but wont bombard you with everything ha ha Did I see 1 of your earliest videos where you harvested possibly a half a bucket of Olives and were going to try fermenting them? If I didnt dream that... how did you get on with those? Is the Fire Ban applicable to the use of Petrol Powered tools? And honestly lastly but not least.... am sure you have both thought about and done this, but once the IBCs run low/empty.... do you rinse out the Silt/sediment that gathers at the bottom of the tanks? I just think that would be a nightmare if any of that got in to your irrigation sustem and started blocking lines? I swore I would keep it short but apologies.... just great to see how far you both have come along and just reminded me of questions I had from your very first video

@SmithsdaleFarm pruning is essential. Most of the time the best option is renew the trunk, cut down the old part and let new branches to growing. I have seen than some trees have many young truncks , leave just one. In 2 or 3 years you can produce yout own olive oíl. If you had livestock, you coul add manure. I have my finca near Lleida. I invite you to visit It and have a look in this region, thera are also many homesteads for sale

We just posted a video today that shows what we are doing at the moment with the trees. We are aiming to get down to one trunk but thought it would be too much of a shock to do it all at once? We were thinking to take the bulk out of it this year, then trim them down to 3 or so trunks next year then select a final one the year afterwards? Or do we just need to be more brutal and take it all at once leaving the one trunk now?

Leave just one trunk, and form de tree ( formar la cruz) at 1,5 metres. In two years you Will crop olives. Most people use the tradicional way to get rid of cut branches. They burn them. It,s ecological and the quickest way

I am wondering how on earth these trees can ever be giving fruit high up the mountain. I would have done figs only, or maybe a mulberry. Or drill a well.
@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm 11 күн бұрын
Drilling a well would be more expensive than the cost of the land 🙈 but we have rainwater collection and storage, and we are adding more irrigation this year for the trees. So far most of the trees are growing quite well 🤞🏻

@SmithsdaleFarm the difficulty is producing fruits.. they need tons of water in this climate. Been in Spain since 2006. You can try Peruvian apple cactus, cereus peruvianus. They give pretty tasty fruits. And prickly pears. The good thing you did was planting the nisperos really small, that is the best system since they need less and can adapt better. Nice to see your videos, keep up the good work!

We tried it both ways. The elevation is not actually that big. The top of the IBCs is about the same level as the bottom of the cisterna. With gravity, it took over 2 hours to fill 1 IBC tank. (1000L). With the pump we can do all 4 tanks in about 1 hour. It is solar energy, so what’s the problem?! 🤷🏻‍♀️
