IF they move they form a line and also fill in the gaps so more spartans fight at the same time, while if they stand they'd get surrounded faster and individual soldiers would get surrounded easier if their nearby allies die. Even though they got surrounded this fight i'd assume if they had hold ground, they'd have a worse K/D ratio.

& also High ground actually applies in the game. as Bodies stack the enemy can actually attack downward despite how much space there is.
